Miami coach Randy Shannon said he is ''gathering more information'' on the Saturday arrest of linebacker Zach Kane, who was charged with aggravated assault for allegedly breaking a bottle over the head of another teenager at a party in New Jersey. The victim reportedly did not see who struck him. ''It's not true. I'm innocent,'' Kane said Tuesday. ''I left the party before it happened.'' Kane is not expected on campus until the legal issue is resolved.

This kid's local newspaper already has him as guilty. A high school football player, accused of assault at a back-yard party, on the front front page of the local rag that months ago had him as a hero. On all levels, the media does the same thing - build 'em up, the knock them down. Once again, let's see actually if the kid did anything.

Maybe the kid is telling the turth and the newspaper is sensationalizing and trying to manufature a story; we are talking about a prize recruit going to a university that is headline worthy. Or are we so enamored with the press, that we can't beleive a newspaper would "stretch" the facts.

Thoughts of the entire Miami team participating in an on the field brawl.....how do you explain away that one SVT?

Thug.

June 18, 2008  12:38 PM ET

one more thing einsteins, go do some research on what team has had the most players arrested since 2000.. it surely isnt miami, they are near the bottom. this is 2008, not the 1980's..

SVTJer
No, it is not the 1980's, you're right there. But the team attitude, i.e., stomping around the field, chest thumping, yelling screaming and all the rest of it, as well as the aforementioned brawl tell me that perhaps not much has changed...Einstein...

Miami has had problems in the past but what major college hasn't. To bad mouth a player who hasn't played at UM yet is crazy. If you don't have all the facts then no one can comment for it or against it. I think when you make a disturbing remark against Miami its more about being jealous of a program who has 5 national championships. A lot of those thug players who are in the NFL are loved by their fans. If you are just a hater of a great program then prepare yourself cause the road is going to get bumpy. Have a nice Thug day.

so athletes stomping, chest thumping, and yelling and screaming make a school full of thugs...youve never played sports before have you?go look at the college football headlines for the past few years and i see how many more times your team has been brought up for having players get in trouble..even the brawl has been performed by clemson and south carolina as well as ivy league schools...get a life and quit hating on miami

Spiny Norman | 06/18/08, 12:38 PM

Everything you mentioned, except for the brawl, is harmless. It's called passion, and if you don't have it, you'll never be a great football player. Everyone, from coaches to teammates to fans, expects these KIDS to give 100% on the field. We call them things like "warriors" and refer to the game as "a battle". We sit in the stands, or stand on the sidelines, and yell and scream for them to play as hard as they can. We try to jack up their adrenaline as high as possible...and then...we act surprised when they show any enthusiasm beyond the very limited constraints that the rules demand. This is stupid. Some players go about their business with cold quiet precision, and that's fine. That doesn't make a player who yells and celebrates "a thug". They're EXCITED !!! I'm certainly not condoning ANY criminal behavior, but that's just my point - being excited and showing it is NOT thuggish behavior. If I were that young, and I was playing football on national TV, and I made a great play, I'd be screamin' my fool head off ! That might irritate the opposing team/fans, but it sure wouldn't make me "a thug". Can we PLEEEEEASE stop (OVER)using that term?

June 18, 2008  01:29 PM ET

.. you can take the guy outta the ghetto, but ya can't take the ghetto
out of Miami.

June 18, 2008  01:33 PM ET

Wait....stop the presses....A hurricane player got arrested??? Holy crap, that's never happened before. I guess Thug U is still going strong!

June 18, 2008  02:00 PM ET

This is a court of public opinion, not law. Therefore we can assume he is guilty based on our interpretation of the facts as they have been presented. And just because the victim didn't see him, doesn't mean someone else didn't.

June 18, 2008  02:35 PM ET

I meant for someone first mentionning the word thug. Bill Wrigley got very close before I looked, but Spiny Norman demolished the over.

June 18, 2008  04:45 PM ET

I guess it is hard for Univ. of Miami to get rid of the thug-u tag, but in reality this (player arrest) seems to be running at a all time high at this point. Thugism seems to be rampant in this society any more.
