Tank's reason for carrying gun

News of the robbery and beating that put Raiders receiver Javon Walker in a Las Vegas hospital Monday caught the attention of several players as the Dallas Cowboys opened minicamp Tuesday. "And they (league officials) get mad at me for carrying a gun?" said nose tackle Tank Johnson, who was suspended by the league after the 2006 season in part because he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor weapons charge in Illinois. "I'm not saying that's the best solution," Johnson said of using a gun for protection. "But to protect yourself is vital. I mean, these people have no regard for you or your safety, so you are in a tough position."

A gun ... ? Okay! An entire arsenal, Tank?!?!? Might be overkill (pun intended!)

June 19, 2008  07:36 AM ET

He has a point

June 19, 2008  07:46 AM ET

It wasn't legal gun ownership that got them mad Tank, it was the fact that you had enough firepower to mount a small insurrection in many Latin-American countries that disturbed them...

June 19, 2008  07:49 AM ET

ghostofthebabe..actually it was just bc the guns weren't registered in Illinois.. they WERE legally registered in Arizona. It's not like he was out shooting up the town.

June 19, 2008  07:58 AM ET

He's got a point. If you're going to cut loose, have a few drinks & spray the crowd with Dom, make sure you're armed. JJ Arrington could just have shot the people he was scuffling with if he had a gun.

Didn't Tank get caught with like multiple guns? Like machine guns, uzi's, that sort of stuff? That's a lot of protection. You'd be safe from a small militia. Somehow your response doesn't add up Tank. Are you pack'n heat again????

June 19, 2008  08:02 AM ET

walker got knocked out for being a tard. it had nothing to do with being robbed.

June 19, 2008  08:03 AM ET

Tank is the last person who needs to be commenting on anything related to weapons. Just shut the freak up Tank.

June 19, 2008  08:11 AM ET

what a idiot.....just stick to playing football and keep your mouth shut - you big dope! big difference in carrying a single gun and having enough firepower to take down Tony Montana, mang!!

Don't you know Bobo, you need that kind of protection as an NFL player...(sarcastic) when you live in Southern Mexico! lol!

June 19, 2008  08:13 AM ET

This sounds like an excellent opportunity for Mr. Johnson to smile and politely reply "no comment". Maybe that's asking a bit much though...

June 19, 2008  08:21 AM ET

If I was a NFL player with a lot of money I would want to carry multiple weapons. Its my life or some thug trying to rob me.

What are the statistics? 9 times out of 10 you get shot with your own gun? Something like that I think.

June 19, 2008  08:52 AM ET

Lady your crazy!, its 10 out of 11

June 19, 2008  08:57 AM ET

Tank Williams???OMG. His rap sheet fills a whole page. He has basically spent the last five years of his life on probation, not that it stopped him from everything from weapons charges, to assaults to driving after drinking chatges, speeding, name it.....
Tank, keep a low profile... jeesh.
