Knicks may deal sixth pick

With the NBA Draft one week away, there's still a debate whether the Knicks will use the sixth pick or trade down. There are indications the Knicks would like to come out of next Thursday night with a point guard-of-the-future, whether in the draft or via trade. Stephon Marbury is entering his final year of his contract, and there isn't another starting point guard on the roster. Toronto's T.J. Ford, Milwaukee's Mo Williams, Indiana's Jamaal Tinsley, whom Walsh drafted, and Portland's Jarrett Jack are on the block. Sources have indicated Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo, who picks 17th and is looking to move up, has been most active.

None of the above listed PGs is worth the 6th pick, but Artest may be. Since there is no sure fire PG at that position either, just wait for the best offer from a team desperate to trade up.

Not Artest! That nut job will put the Knicks an additional 2 years behind in terms of progress.

"Point guard of the future" is a good move for the Knicks.
But what about "shooting guard of the future", "small forward of the future", "power forward of the future", and "center of the future" ?
Wonder how well the Knicks will do with a star point guard and a group of average players at the other positions.

The Hornets did ok with that type of set up this year.

Ford would match well with Nate Robinson (whom is high on D'Antoni's list of Knicks' roster players), but I don't think that NY will trade this pick.
They're rebuilding, which means the'll keep the expiring contracts and get younger.

Chris Paul is a little different then any trash they are going to get to play the point with the 6th pick...

First they will have to trade just to get some average players...

"Another starting point guard"????? Who's the first one?

June 19, 2008  09:27 AM ET

NY

June 19, 2008  09:28 AM ET

...should probably just release Marbury if they can't trade him.

June 19, 2008  09:35 AM ET

Releasing Marbury would be the smart move. If the Knicks are ever going to get towards a low salary cap, it makes sense to get rid of his 20 million and move on.

As far as the draft goes, they should trade down. Mayo and Bayless would be gone by 6 and 6 is too high for Augustin. If they can trade down with the Raptors and pick up TJ Ford in the process, I would say that Walsh made a good deal.

June 19, 2008  09:37 AM ET

The Bucks was not a playoff team until they drafted Ford. The one year Ford was hurt and Mo Williams was the starter, they did not make the playoffs. When TJ returned from injury they made the playoff. They traded him to Toronto and they have not made the playoffs since.

Toronto was not a playoff team. After the Vince Carter trade, everybody had written them off. When Toronto gave up Charlie, Toronto has been in the playoffs ever since.

In short, TJ is a winner. So I would say all he does is win in unwinnable places.
TJ is the guy NY should go after.

June 19, 2008  09:45 AM ET

They should just make Starbury their point guard of the future, seeing as how he isn't their point guard of the present.

True, but Paul was taken with the 4th in his draft, the thing isn't an exact science you never really know how a kid is going to evolve as a player, they may not end up with the next CP but it mightutrn out better than you think.

looking at the knicks roster makes me ill. the knicks are really pretty much the only team in the league without a legit superstar....how does the mecca of the sports world(NYC) not have a freakin superstar....oh yeah thanks zeke!!

i say the knicks best option is to pickup the best available whomever that maybe and use that along with the current trade bait that makes up their roster and bring in a bonafide superstar namely a guy named King James. quit all this messin around and build around somebody worth more than two pennies!

June 19, 2008  10:32 AM ET

The Knicks really need to cut every player they have and start over. Pick up guys from the NBDL and have them play their **** off. They could not be a worse collection of talent than what they have now.

June 19, 2008  10:44 AM ET

If the Knicks do trade the pick, they will get a great player back. Look at Donnie Walsh's trade history pre-Bird. It's impeccable.

June 19, 2008  10:45 AM ET

Also, Hova. That's an amazing pic right there. Catch a Fire was a phenomenal album (same with every Marley album).

June 19, 2008  10:53 AM ET

Starbury is not the answer for the Knicks at PG so losing him after this season is a plus. If they can't get a good one or the best PGs are gone when they pick at 6 then they definitely should trade down. Plus they haven't had the best drafts the past two years.

June 19, 2008  11:09 AM ET

Who cares, they won't be worth a damn until after next season when they unload some of that aweful salary that Isiah saddled them with.
Nothing left to do now but light a match, collect the insurance and start over...
