Jackets, Penguins talked trade

If the Blue Jackets want to acquire Pittsburgh Penguins left winger Ryan Malone, they'll have to wait for the start of free agency. Malone told The Dispatch last night that he will explore free agency July 1 and is not willing to negotiate with the Blue Jackets or any other club before then. The Blue Jackets and Penguins had preliminary discussions about a trade that would have sent Malone's negotiating rights to Columbus in exchange for a player or a draft pick at this weekend's NHL draft. Minnesota and Vancouver were also said to be interested in a similar deal with Pittsburgh, but Malone nixed that possibility. "I don't want any team I go to to give up a possible teammate," Malone said. "So we will wait till (July 1)."

For all my ragging on about keeping hockey in apropriate places, I really don't have too much issue with it in Ohio, though I can't say I've been to a game there...There really isn't any talk abouty them leaving, so I guess the franchise is somewhat stable, right?

I have relatives there and say that the area where the arena is nice and developed, but the interest doesn't come close to other hockey cities.

Too bad. I think we need more Northern teams. Leave NASCAR for the South

Malone is not greedy. i'd do the same thing if I were in his skates. he's 28, coming off his best year, why not take the money? he's got a chance to make enough money for the next few generations of malones. his best shot to win the cup is probably to stay with pittsburgh, but he's only 28, he's got plenty of years ahead of him.

June 19, 2008  11:07 AM ET

No matter how stable a franchise, only a fool would go play hockey in Columbus. It's a dead zone.

June 19, 2008  11:19 AM ET

malone spent half the finals in the penalty box. he's not particularly productive either. so why the fuss?

June 19, 2008  11:19 AM ET

I don't get why everyone is calling him greedy. Of course he is going to test the free agent market. What kind of idiot wouldn't?

Want to talk about greedy, look no further than Mats Sundin.

I guess I'm an idiot because I wouldn't bother, I'd take the 3 million a season to stay playing for my home town team that my dad played for too. That would be good enough for me, sign me at that for 3-4 years I'd be happy. Then hopefully win a cup in there somewhere and increase your value even more possibly if not I'm still pretty happy with 9-12 million. That's above the poverty line isn't it.
