The Penguins are looking to make a big move before the first round of the NHL entry draft tomorrow night at Scotiabank Place. Trying to pry the No. 2 pick away from the Los Angeles Kings and get into the first round, league sources say Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero has dangled all-star center Evgeni Malkin to the Kings in a deal that may have included center Mike Cammalleri going the other way. While many NHL executives refused to believe the Penguins actually would trade the 21-year-old Malkin because he has one year left on his entry-level contract at $984,000, the indications are that Shero is trying to find a way to keep Marian Hossa from becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Is ther ever a day on T&R when there isn't a story about the Penguins?

****. Are the suppose to be America's team now?

Anyway, this is a tough call. Both are great players and Hossa is still young. However, keeping Crosby and Malkin paired for as long into their careers as possible would be very interesting.

Would Malkin in LA generate hockey interest in South Cal?

Cindy....man, are you ever jealous!

June 20, 2008  07:15 AM ET

This story is a load of crap. Anything coming out of this paper dealing with trades has been proven repeatedly that they are nothing more than rumors and complete lies. I mean, c'mon, the 2nd pick and WHO for Malkin? That should tell you right there it is a load of garbage. Besides, an LA Times writer who also writes for "The Hockey News" says this is bogus as well as the Kings are re-building starting with their D.

Thus, don't even waste your time........

June 20, 2008  07:52 AM ET

if there is any truth to the rumor of the pens shopping Malkin, then I hope the Leafs are listening... a young mvp candidate available???

do what you have to do Cliff... these chances are extremely rare to obtain a proven top tier talent - especially early early in his career...

June 20, 2008  08:14 AM ET

Honestly, the first thing Pittsburgh needs to do is get a new coach.

June 20, 2008  08:22 AM ET

And well they should! After his dreadful performance under playoff preasure, I'm sure they're having some questions about his heart. But then, let's not forget that Pavel Datsiuk's performance during previous playoffs wasn't that stellar either.

I think it's a matter of maturity, Datsiuk has it. Malkin doesn't. And ..... me thinks Malkin is no Datsiuk, regardless!

LOL, I like how you can make an annoying name and make annoying comments but can't pic an avatar CC. I hope I didn't step on Baun-deds toes, isn't he usually on avatar duty? :-)

Can we report his logon as a violation???

This story is a load of crap. Anything coming out of this paper are nothing more than rumors and complete lies.

Hey we're from Toronto, well Canada anyway, and we resemble that remark.

BUT, if it is true, then the Pens would be dumbest. Maybe they like the idea of a 5 year dynasty instead of 10-15. Well, send him over to us in exhange for either Green or Backstrom and Semin. No no no, I couldn't do that , how about one of those Dmen with Laitch and a pick instead? I could just see Malkin at center with Ovie on his left wing... "I like dreamin', cause dreamin' can make you mine....."

And still flying, I see. Being scavengers and thieves, eagles are VERY resilient. Beat DDT. Hope you don't get the Willie Randolph treatment though LOL.

Durk, this guy is trying hard so I don't want to be mean, but he needs to do three things:
1. Sort out his multiple personality disorder
2. Stop clogging up the threads with ridiculous remarks (see Avs thread today)
3. Stop calling Sid Cindy, it's driving me crazy

I also doubt Malkin will be sold but that deal makes sense to me. The Kings do have 2 up and coming dmen in Johnson and Hickey. They're not in a desperate need for another one blue-liner.
However, the Pens have to solve several issues:
a) Jordan Staal wasting his potential stuck in the third line
b) Lack of truly great LWs
c) Malkin's salary which will skyrocket next season
d) No draft picks in the first round of tonight's draft
e) A very likely loss of several players to FA

Conclusion: if the staus quo is maintained, they'll soon lack potent and cheap firepower which is crucial in today's hockey. If they can work out a deal with LA (say Malkin for Frolov, Brown and 2nd pick) , the'y ll have all abovementioned problems solved for the next few years. And they'd gain on depth.

He can have mine. We're going back to the NFL anyway, hopefully he'll tag along.....BTW, did you see the way he clogged up that Thrasher's thread? It's time for the hammers, boys!

June 20, 2008  09:30 AM ET

You know, if you combine this story (shopping Malkin) with the next 9re: Avery and Jagr) there's an ideal trade. Think about it;
the Rangers get a marquee player to the biggest tv market, so Mini Me is happy
The pens get Avery, which like it or not, will be a big help to Crosby, Hossa, etc. And fans love that stuff...when it's on their own team. We Ranger fans learned to embrace Esa and Ulf...
And Jagr gets to end his career where it started, a nice little circular thingy...
GET SLATS ON THE PHONE>>>LET'S DO THIS!!!

I don't know anything except that the Blues are supposedly working on some big deal. They have a lot of young defensemen, a lot of draft picks, and no offense. Keep an eye on that.
