Why NBC sticks by Notre Dame
For the fourth time since they vowed to love and honor each other in 1990, Notre Dame and NBC Sports renewed their television vows on Thursday, guaranteeing that the university's home football games will remain on the network through the 2015 season. Not a bad deal for a program that went 3-9 last season. And not bad for a team whose rating stood at 3.6 in 2005, dipped to 3.0 in 2006 and crashed to 1.9 last season, the worst in the lovey-dovey NBC-Notre Dame marriage. The new deal reflects a desire to stick together even in hard times; NBC had plenty of time to wait for the team to improve before deciding if it wanted to extend the deal. "When Notre Dame is good, and they're often quite good, they bring more attention to football than anyone else," Ken Schanzer, the president of NBC Sports. Schanzer has a son and a daughter at Notre Dame. The eldest son of Dick Ebersol, the chairman of NBC Sports, is a graduate.

The contract between ND and NBC helps make ND one of the most affordable private universities in the US and allows many who would not have otherwise been able to attend the chance to go to an excellent academic university. If you do not like ND than do not watch, but for many this contract means the chance of a lifetime and that is the real story here.

What isn't said is that NBC isn't quite forking over the same amount of dough to Notre Shame because of the poor ratings. This gives crappy NBC the ability to make more money off of the advertising while still allowing ND to still make some money and exposure. It would be great to see ND continue to suck on national TV. My guess is that ratings will still suffer except when Michigan and USC play them because people want to see UM and USC and not ND.

I watched ND a couple times last season and it was hard to keep food down watching that sickening display of football. At least Michigan had moments when they played like a quality team (Bowl win over Florida). Had Michigan not suffered some key injuries (Henne, Hart) I think they would have been a 2 loss team playing in the Rose Bowl. Injuries are part of the game and it hurt Michigan. What was ND's excuse, they lost to NAVY of all teams.

Notre Dame is NBC's legacy child. Does not matter how bad you are, you can always go there.
George W. Bush is to Yale as Notre Dame is to NBC.

I'm glad NBC renewed this contract. Watching ND gets its **** kicked on national TV every week is one of my little joys in this world.

MarqND...Notre Dame is many things but affordable is not one of them. At over $40k a year, I have the loans to back me up on that.

Of course NBC would want to keep Notre Dame football. It's the only football the network has. Without ND it's just golf, tennis, and in the case of this year the Olympics.

nineteen...how is the Church unethical because it renewed a deal to broadcast football games?
Get some perspective champ, the team's popular win or lose (and makes money - people watch, companies advertise, things work out for both sides). And I'm guessing the GE shareholders won't exactly be in an uproar over NBC sports management extending a contract to broadcast amateur football games six times a year. Just b/c you don't like them does not make this an "unethical" decision.
