NHL threatens Rangers franchise

A lingering dispute between the N.H.L. and Madison Square Garden took a nasty turn Thursday, with the league asking a United States District Court judge to open the door for punishing the owner of the Rangers for filing a lawsuit against the league last fall. The N.H.L.'s court filing included a letter from Commissioner Gary Bettman saying the league could pursue punishment ranging from a fine to suspension to a termination of the Rangers' franchise. The Garden responded by calling the countersuit "bullying tactics." The case stems from an antitrust lawsuit the Garden filed in September, attempting to stop the N.H.L. from incorporating the Rangers' Web site into a leaguewide collective controlled by NHL.com. The team has had mostly setbacks in its case, with a judge in the Second Circuit United States Court of Appeals in March calling the team's request for an injunction "without merit."

Have any of you guys seen the commercial where Shannahan tries to hit an apple with the puck off a guys head?

HILARIOUS!!!

Terminate the Rangers' franchise? Seriously, if NHL is to make threaths they should atleast make them probable.. otherwise it'll just be laughable.

June 20, 2008  09:12 AM ET

It already is laughable!

BETTMAN S***S EVEN MORE NOW!!!

June 20, 2008  11:24 AM ET

Yeah, Bettman wont get rid of the Florida Panthers, Atlanta Thrashers or Columbus Blue Jackets, but he'll axe the Rangers? Be serious. He puts NHL franchises in non-traditional markets and watches them flounder, but then he'll threaten to remove a storied franchise from one of America's largest markets? Can we give Bettman back to the NBA before he does even more damage to the NHL?

June 20, 2008  11:30 AM ET

Sick 'em, Spiny.............

June 20, 2008  11:47 AM ET

Everyone should support the Rangers right now - even Flyers fans!
The NHL has to stop its ridiculous fascist deeds!

GO RANGERS GO

Terminate MSG's OWNERSHIP of the rangers....not the rangers.

but if they are going to terminate the rangers, I would like to request they do it in the following order:

1. avery
2. Hollweig
3. tikkanen
4. beukoboom
5. messier
6. M. keenan

June 20, 2008  12:06 PM ET

if they terminate the rangers all those ranger fans could then have a real team to support like the Devils...

oh, no you di'int!

What you say may be true, but the article said

"the league could pursue punishment ranging from a fine to suspension to a termination of the Rangers' franchise. "

Notice it said franchise and note ownership. The way I read it yesterday, the NHL could push for change of ownership if it chose, but it may also be in its power to terminate the franchise.

you are correct, I saw it characterized as a change of ownership yesterday but this article clearly states termination of the franchise...RIDICULOUS...but with Bettman running things, you never know.

I am no ranger fan, but I cannot think of anything stupider or more damaging to an already severly damaged league than terminating that franchise.

list of stupid bettman moves;

1. terminating NYR
2. allowing a team called "the mighty ducks" to name themselves after a kids hockey movie by disney (who coincidentally own the team of the same name in some sort of brilliant marketing scheme)
3. daring to show his sniveling face during the stanley cup presentation (and trembling all the while)

June 20, 2008  12:54 PM ET

the fact that the nhl now controls the websites they blow give the rangers what they want and leave them alone throw them out of the league come on bettmans and ****hol@ i enjoy my flyers rangers rivlery

lets go flyers 08-09

I would like to think that, if Bettman came on here and read what people have to say about him, he would shrivel up and disappear ... but I fear it is a faint hope.

June 20, 2008  03:05 PM ET

Oilers....can he read?

June 20, 2008  03:35 PM ET

Well TR ..... I kind of assumed .... with him being Commissioner and all ...
Do you think maybe not?

If I can be serious for one moment (you have no idea how tough that is for me)
People like Bettman (and Mayor Bloomberg in NYC) never think they're doing anything wrong, that everybody ELSE is wrong, so reading these threads would do nothing to alter his mindset. Bad spelling aside, GAGS12 has a point. The league controls all league matters, including publicity. Bettman was trying to emulate the NFL/MLB, and when the vote was taken, there were 3 dissents, one of those being the NYR.
I think this will be Bettman's downfall. If it isn't, than the league should just fold it's tents. Maybe we can get another WHA going, as this is getting out of hand like it was back then.

BETTMAN S***S

Can we get Yao to just step on Gary already?, now he's just being stupid. Putting teams in Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky and keeping them, but you're going to remove a huge hockey market. Gary, you are the weakest link, goodbye.
