Tommie Harris signed a four-year extension Thursday night that will pay him $40 million in new money, with $27 million coming in the first three years. The Bears deal guarantees him $17 million and ensures he will not receive the franchise tag, which would have been a near certainty after this season if he wasn't signed. In terms of average annual salary and payout over the first three years, Harris is the highest-paid interior lineman in the league.

Boy I'll bet Urlacher's pissed!

There goes most of his money.

June 20, 2008  08:14 AM ET

wow.. the most surprising thing about this story is that the bears actually opened their wallets. why does it seem that every bears player has to fight tooth and nail for a raise.

June 20, 2008  08:36 AM ET

Congrats Fatty, You get to block for Grosman, lucky you!

June 20, 2008  08:39 AM ET

WOW! The Bears did something right for a change! They spent some money on a real player!

No matter! As things go these days, he'll want to re-negotiate in two years!

June 20, 2008  09:11 AM ET

He's a defensive lineman there Hank........and the anchor of the defense when he's healthy. Maybe you should know something about what you're saying before you post....

June 20, 2008  09:23 AM ET

yes you are right

June 20, 2008  09:29 AM ET

My hate for Grossman blinds me sometimes

Contrary to what most people say, the Bears are pretty good at signing their core players to fair deals. Tommie is now the highest paid d-lineman. Urlacher was the highest paid defensive player at the time of signing his deal. Last summer, Tillman and Vasher signed to 4 and 5 year deals, keeping the cornerback tandem happy. Briggs resigned for 6 years this offseason. Desmond Clark received a 2-yr extension in February. Kruetz got his extension in 2006. They are not as cheap as people think or else these players would be on other teams right now.

"why does it seem that every bears player has to fight tooth and nail for a raise."

That, my friend, is called negotiating.

You need to get out more...

June 20, 2008  09:51 AM ET

And ..... don't forget the nice contract they gave Cedric Benson, ThisBudz4Me!

June 20, 2008  09:54 AM ET

Finally some good news. Tommie was arguably the most dominant player in football for the first half of '06. When healthy, he's the best player on that defense. How's the knee? Hopefully, Hester is next.

June 20, 2008  10:43 AM ET

Nice! Lock up Hester and lets do this.

You are going to see Grossman/Orton's numbers rise this year as Hester gets more receiving time. Basically it will be throw the ball as hard and far as you can and let him go chase it. TOUCHDOWN 23! Watch out for TE Greg Olsen too. The next Shockey without the bad attitude.

BEAR DOWN!

June 20, 2008  11:24 AM ET

Trade Urlacher while he still has value. He is on the down and will have a bad year

DCruiser

I would rather forget about that one :)

Bears suck. Grossmans numbers wouldnt even go up if he learned how to throw and learned what his teammates uniforms looked like....

He sucks. As long as the bears are dumb enough to keep him and orton, the easier it will be for the entire NFC to whip their butts again this year.

Great move Jerry, but I hope he does not get hurt again.

well heres what i say saihung...

what kind of a quarterback are ya when you have no one to throw to??

i think if you stick bradley out there more often with hester theres no way that grossman couldnt nail that long pass down the field...

and considering he already has a rapport with marty booker...to a point..it might turn out better than you think...

tho i still think we need an elite receiver to take over...its all we really need...it all works itself out

Hank Hill....You are an Idiot! Tommie Harris is a Defensive Lineman. He doesn't block for Grossman. If you know nothing about football...shut your hole!

You might want to lay off of Hank. Then next time you need propane or propane accessories, you may be outta luck.
