Bucs close to cutting Simms?

Chris Simms may not have to wait much longer for the release he wants from the Bucs. Armed with a league-issued mandate to reduce their roster to 80 players by the start of training camp, the Bucs already have begun the process of purging players. Whether Simms will be among those let go remains uncertain, but the chances have increased as a result of the mandate.

I hope he gets a chance to play somewhere. I think he could be a good one. It is obvious Gruden does not think so. If he is cut, he will be picked up by some team , and soon.

All the bridges in Tampa are burned now, but a team like the Chiefs or Bears should give this guy a chance to compete for a starting spot.

But when they cut him, they'll likely sign 8 other QBs the same day

Not with the mandate in palce;; they will probably need to settle for signing only four or five QBs

June 20, 2008  10:35 AM ET

Who? Oh, the guy who was handed Major Applewhite's job at Texas after pressure was applied by daddy and really hasn't earned anything yet. Sounds perfect for the Bears.

June 20, 2008  10:59 AM ET

I hate Simms.......but they really need to let this guy go. Maybe he can catch on with another team and maybe produce....

June 20, 2008  11:07 AM ET

You mean the same Simms who can't get the ball over the line of scrimmage? I'm a Bucs fan and I remember when he was the starter.... If it weren't for the same last name as his dad he wouldn't be in the NFL. Simms is a mediocre talent. I hope the Bucs cut him and he ends up like Ryan Leaf!

June 20, 2008  11:19 AM ET

He wants to go, they have 4 other QBs and he's not the top 3, so let the kid go already.

June 20, 2008  11:23 AM ET

Maybe the bucs can replace simms QB spot with Culpepper.

June 20, 2008  11:30 AM ET

Im sure they will sign leftwich as soon as they cut him.

June 20, 2008  11:54 AM ET

Please let this kid go so he can start somewhere else like probably chicago and his hairy QB'S!!!

I think Chris will be a good starter on another team, but it would have to be a West Coast offense. I think he is a little weak (i.e. Aaron Rodgers) and needs to work on his overall strength. Nevertheless, I would take him as a flyer in a backup role that could potentially compete for a starting job in Training Camp. I doubt he would win the job, but he would set himself to be the #1 backup. I could even see him going to Miami (not sure if they will run WC, but probably not) obviously because of the Parcells connection as well as their poor QB pool.

He doesn't want to be there and could be a cancer on this division winning team. They should release him because they won't get anything for him.

June 20, 2008  12:37 PM ET

Ugh, this is still a story?? You do realize this is Chris Simms? Just cut him and let's get going. He's not even a starting QB in my book. His skills were suspect at Texas and even worse here in the pros. He's a good backup QB. Time to bury this story.

Sorry to rant to enough of this mess.

LocNar...and "your book" is published and available where? Thought so.

June 20, 2008  01:30 PM ET

hope he gets a shot to start again. wasn't great but had moments. and bear's fans, he's better than rex

June 20, 2008  01:40 PM ET

Let him go. The Bucs know they aren't going to play him.

June 20, 2008  04:08 PM ET

This guy can throw well over the line. He has the strongest arm on the team. His delivery got suspect after the surgery. we went what like 11-5 and came back against washington with the deep ball from chris. I did by the way hate him starting over major at texas, and he may only be average but he can still make plays. Carolina went to senior home to get a QB last year, so this guy has value if he is healed and able to correct his delivery.

Hey coach, Culpepper's out there. If your planning to replace or add

Chris Simms can come home to New Jersey and play for the Jets any day. I always liked him as a QB and I think he will be a good alternative to Clemens and Pennington.
