Kobe: I won't play GM this summer

Kobe Bryant emerged for his first in-depth public comments Thursday after a 30-minute exit meeting with Coach Phil Jackson and General Manager Mitch Kupchak at the Lakers' training facility. On a quiet day in El Segundo, Bryant seemed upbeat, even cracking a few jokes, seemingly more reassured now by the Lakers' future than by what the team failed to accomplish a few days ago. "I'm comfortable with what we have," he said. "Whatever Mitch decides to do, he decides to do. It's more of a relaxing summer for me because I know we have an opportunity to win. It's exciting. We know we got close and came up a little bit short. I'm excited about the opportunity to get back next year if we're fortunate enough and have a different result."

awww. well isnt that nice of him to let someone that knows what they are doing their job!!!

June 20, 2008  10:08 AM ET

it will be nice if Kobe keeps his mouth shut

I really like watching his play on the court but his immature rants off court get old

June 20, 2008  10:08 AM ET

There's Odom's endorsement right there. He hinted at getting Vlade & Luke on the first thing smoking out of town.

June 20, 2008  10:11 AM ET

I don't believe Kobe for a minute. He's saying the right thing, but if there is a legitimate chance for the Lakers to add someone with "star" quality, Kobe will be in Kupchak's ear.

June 20, 2008  10:13 AM ET

good. maybe you should concentrate on showing up in finals if your team makes it next year.....because you might have all the kobe and LA faithful fooled but not me. you were AWOL...and it was simply shameful the way you folded in the 2nd qtr of gm 7 of NBA finals

I also agree with J Hova, but Kobe may have learneed a lesson after his temper tantrums last year caused Garnett NOT to become his team mate. Kobe, can whisper into Kupchak's ear all day, just keep his mouth SHUT in public.

Kobe will keep his mouth shut until Mitch does something he doesn't like

Kobe keeping his mouth shut? Until he's declared the owner of the Lakers, I don't see Kobe keeping his mouth shut. And even if he was declared the owner of the Lakers, I don't see Kobe keeping his mouth shut. Kobe will never keep his mouth shut.

June 20, 2008  11:11 AM ET

Kupchak should spread a rumor that Kobe is on the market.

June 20, 2008  11:16 AM ET

Kobe's mouth is like your local 7-11...

Always open.

June 20, 2008  11:24 AM ET

well thats another term for goodbye radmanovich, walton and odom

June 20, 2008  11:41 AM ET

Kobe won't play GM....but he will play like he owns the team and makes all the decisions

June 20, 2008  12:01 PM ET

Kobe play GM and tell Mitch to get rid of Radmonavic; he is an overpriced three point shooter who plays no defense. And please, do not trade Farmar, he is the future PG of this team.

June 20, 2008  12:08 PM ET

The Lost Angeles Fakers will have to tweak this team in order to get back next year. Kobe knows it, and is simply trying to be politically correct. I'm sure he remembers the fan's response to his whining last year.

With all these Laker threads, I seem to have forgotten who won the championship this season?

June 20, 2008  01:29 PM ET

Kobe can play, hands down.

But he is so immature and can be rude. He ripped his teammates. He walked out early during one of the finals games. I hate seeing that stuff.

June 20, 2008  01:37 PM ET

As a laker fan I cant believe what I'm reading.I thank Kobe for forcing Mitch's hand last yaer or we would of never won the west. What has mitch done before getting gasol.Lets see. Traded away Butler for Kwame? Great job buddy.Paid Rad tons of money he deosn't deserve?Another doozy! Kobe new that things would just sit stagnent so he spoke up.Thanks Kobe for forcing them to make a change.Mitch has to do alot more in my eyes before I dont call him cupcake!!

June 20, 2008  01:38 PM ET

Sorry my spelling is really bad this morning!!

JoeDew, MJ ripped on his teamates whenever they screw up. Remeber him socking Kerr in the face during practice? Remember him forcing Kwame's confidence out of his body? It is very unfair that he constantly being compared to MJ but it's great the same time because it means he is cracking that boarder or greatness. We can't say heis immature, you can probably blame that on this competitive nature. No one wants to lose.

At the beginning of the season, no one thought the Lakers will be in the Finals. People talked about it only because of history (please quit on the rivalry thing). Next thing you know, there they were able to grab two wins from the eventualy champs. So it's a good thing. It gave them hunger and a tasty teaser.
