Rennes has signed U.S. defender Carlos Bocanegra on a free transfer following his release from Fulham last month. The 29-year-old has penned a three-year deal with Guy Lacombe's men, according to Le'Equipe. Bocanegra, the U.S. captain, made 116 starts for Fulham in a four-year stay but was not offered a new contract by Roy Hodgson despite playing a part in the club's escape from relegation.

He signed for the French league version of Fulham.
He should be a starter, Rennes has lot of issues with its back four.

Rennes is a pretty good team fit for bocenegra, he should see a lot of playin time, Rennes a much better team than Fulham

June 20, 2008  10:39 AM ET

Wow, I didn't see that one coming. At all. I haven't heard a peep about these offers (of course my "French Connections" are very very limited)...

June 20, 2008  10:49 AM ET

I'm very surprised about this also... But Bocanegra should get plenty of playing in Rennes. Should be a good fit for him.

June 20, 2008  11:27 AM ET

I may actually watch a french league game now.

June 20, 2008  11:27 AM ET

And he needs the playing time. Its going to be amusing hearing trying to learn some French. Anyone know of any other American, half-American playing in France? I can't remember one... David Regis (remember him?) retired years ago.

Surprised that this happened so quickly, but good move for him. After looking at who's on Rennes he should get some playing time there.

All I ask is that Rennes do not play him at CB. It's not his position.

D-Wreck, Onyewu "played" for Metz back around 2003-2004 and Greg Vanney played in France for Bastia around the same time.

Quentin Westberg plays in france.... altho im too lazy to look to see what team and division he plays

Jim Rome's show "Rome is Burning" was canceled all week due to soccer? Tell me it isn't so.

June 20, 2008  02:43 PM ET

LOL @ Jim Rome if that is true

June 20, 2008  02:54 PM ET

Being out of a job for just one month means you are good at what you do - good for Bocanegra. I'm with lazymike, might have to start watching Ligue 1 games now.

June 20, 2008  03:18 PM ET

Yes, Onyewu played at Metz...Vanney in France too... Okay, they both got playing time--Vanney struggled. I have to brush up on all my French League facts. Do Rennes play a CDM? If not, they better keep him at RB...

RJdub, are you that JV baseball playing pathetic weasel in disguise? Tell me it isn't so!!!!!

June 20, 2008  06:24 PM ET

I think he may have dropped in the quality of the league but improved in the quality of the team

he needs a change of scenery to get back to his old form, maybe

June 20, 2008  10:11 PM ET

Finally! Now I can get some sleep!

For that, you get a YELLOW CARD!!!

Bocanegra to Rennes? Wow. This move to Brittany came out of left field. Actually, I think it's good for American players to look at other leagues besides England. This may be a good move for Carlos.

I totally agree about needing to go to more leagues than England (and Scandinavia because they are longball automatica too) Same reason I was AMPED that Jozy went to La Liga.

Boca to Rennes is a HUGE upgrade for him. I THINK they have a play in spot for UEFA Cup so their is an outside shot he might actually get some international club competition action whereas Fulham will be fighting with the other losers trying not to be the biggest losers.

After this he's returning back to MLS Rennes do have problem. Mostly with relegation
