Schilling's career may be over

Curt Schilling revealed this morning that he will have season-ending surgery on his right shoulder on Monday, saying there was a "pretty decent chance that I've thrown my last pitch forever." The 41-year-old Red Sox righthander made the disclosure during his weekly interview on WEEI's Dennis and Callahan show, sounding very much like a player whose career could be over. "I don't want it to end this way, but if this is the way it has to end, I'm OK with that," Schilling said. "If it's over and my last pitch was in the 2007 World Series, I'm OK with that. I just can't stress enough where I am mentally with this. I have not a regret in the world. ... None of this makes me bitter or angry or pissed. It is what it is. In that sense, honestly, it's very, very easy for me because of what I've been able to experience compared to what I wanted when I first started my career, but if I have some say in how this is gonna end, I want it to be different than what it is right now."

Curt, though we might not have agreed to your opinions and the frequency with which you voiced them, we Red Sox fans appreciate the dedication, the professionalism and the moxie that you brought to our team. You helped change the culture of the club house and you were our ace when it mattered most! Thanks for helping to bring two titles to Boston!!!!

(as if you'll ever see this....)

June 20, 2008  11:31 AM ET

this has to now bring up the question: WILL CURT MAKE IT TO THE HOF???

June 20, 2008  11:31 AM ET

Schilling and the bloody sock should receive a thank you note from Bill Buckner.

June 20, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Bloody sock! Ha! Still buying that huh?

June 20, 2008  11:33 AM ET

I think Curt is right on the line of HoF. But I think his post-season numbers get him in.

June 20, 2008  11:34 AM ET

yea i dunno about first ballot but i def. think he makes it in there

June 20, 2008  11:37 AM ET

Here's what Baseball Reference has to say about it.

Black Ink: Pitching - 42 (33) (Average HOFer ??? 40)
Gray Ink: Pitching - 205 (34) (Average HOFer ??? 185)
HOF Standards: Pitching - 46.0 (48) (Average HOFer ??? 50)
HOF Monitor: Pitching - 171.0 (33) (Likely HOFer > 100)
Overall Rank in parentheses.

I say he's in easily.

June 20, 2008  11:38 AM ET

I have no idea what those numbers mean, CardsFan. hahaha

Schilling = HOF

Curt, sad to see him go. Its refreshing to watch someone play who knows the game, doesnt juice, and is honest about his opinion. Consequences be damned, he would tell it like he saw it.

And if Boston signed him to 14 million and he doesnt play, its not Schillings fault their morons up there and will pay 5 million to an 8yr old if it looks like the yankees might sign him...

I mean...if they cut him, they dont owe him anything....so how is him doing this wrong? Its not. Grats on a great career Schill.
