What Coyotes gave up for Olli

The Coyotes got the prize they were seeking before they made their first pick in the NHL draft. And even then, they weren't through wheeling and dealing. Phoenix was mentioned only in passing as a possible destination for high-scoring Olli Jokinen. But when the surprise deal was finalized, the Coyotes acquired the Florida Panthers captain in a trade, filling one of their biggest needs. The Coyotes gave up defensemen Keith Ballard and Nick Boynton, and a second-round pick (49th overall). Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said it wasn't an easy decision to trade two of the Coyotes' most-popular players. "To get a good player, you have to give up good players," he said. " . . . We know Keith is a hell of a competitor, and Nick is one of the best team guys we ever had. But at the end of the day, we really needed a big centerman. We needed a guy that had a presence up front who could play 80 games with Shane Doan . . . and have a big solid line. "Now obviously we have a hole to fill, but what a good day. We've got two kids we're really thrilled to have. We had a good day."

The team that gets the better player in a trade, always wins!

That'd be the Coyotes in this here story!

You have to give up something to get quality. You can always find guys like Ballard and Boynton out there but players like Jokinen do not come around very often! Good move, Gretz!

BTW! Did you see/hear the standing O they gave him in Ottawa when he came to the podium? Awesome!

Stevie Y also received a grand ovation DCruise...and rightfully so.

That photo...Bettman looks like some Coyote Ugly high school frump gushing in the hope of being asked to the Prom by the School jock. Come to think of it...that little twerp does have evil embedded in his make-up similar to that of Carrie.

Now...can we talk about the Leafs and Luke Schenn?
Cito Gason returning to the Blue Jays?
13 Trades at the Draft...more than the last 4 yrs combined.
Mayers getting traded after 12 yrs with the Blues to the Leafs...
The Habs talking to the EGG!

You can't miss with any of the top ten picks this year. If Luke Schenn falls to the Leafs at 7, I'm going to be very pleased.

Sorry Melvil...I borrowed your key to the vault to retrieve this quote...I put it back where I found it though so not to worry.

Well...we could make it like that Beer commercial where all the Canadian dudes tie the yappy yank to the hockey net in the driveway and take shots at him...hahahha

That pic rules, its like Gretz is mocking Bettman to his face and Gary ain't doin **** haha. Wicked trade tho, the Coyotes are SLOWLY getting better, but the future does look good.

Pfft...the Leafs are gonna destroy Schenn's career, I can see it now. A year of playing alongside McCabe and the kid will forget everything he ever learned.

mhwings...on second thought...after reading the latest comment...I think I have a new candidate to go in that net...

IDK hot the GM managed to get Olli for a second round pick... must have been desperate to trade him

I don't understand why the Panthers never tried to surround this guy with talent and have a good season. The best player that he ever played with is a washed up Todd Bertuzzi. Great trade for the Coyotes though. This might help to give their fans something to root for.

June 21, 2008  12:54 PM ET

and this time next year oli still won't have played in a playoff game.

June 21, 2008  01:55 PM ET

After 2 seasons of waiting the Panthers to trade Jokinen, they trade him for Boynton and Ballard? Somehow i think there was a better trade out there.

You should be very pleased baun-ded about acquiring Schenn. From what i've read about him,he'll never score a ton of points, but he'll sure shut-down alot of scoring chances. He's supposed to be in the mold of one Adam Foote. Leafs fans should be very pleased indeed.

I think the Mayers trade was bad though, but you guys now have a scrapper that can pot the odd goal.

June 21, 2008  02:07 PM ET

Sundin to the Habs? He'll go down as the biggest traitor in Leafs history if he goes there.(shakes head).

Cammalleiri to the Flames for 2 picks? Bad,bad trade for the Kings. Boston couldnt have pulled off that trade? Or any other team? 2 picks for a top 6 forward is a very low asking price.

I can only join you guys because i can make you guys laugh? Do i amuse you? How do i amuse you? Funny how?Funny like a clown? How the f*** do i amuse you? Huh? Hhahahaha.Jk.

June 21, 2008  02:25 PM ET

how bad are the kings gunna be this year?kopitar and frolov gunna ave to carry some sort of load.

June 21, 2008  02:54 PM ET

This just in...Leafs drafted another monster. 6'5" 210lb R winger Jimmy Hayes...anyone get the feeling the Leafs are building a Burke style team of big rugged North Americans to welcome him to the fold next season?

June 21, 2008  03:38 PM ET

it's tough to say goodbye to ballard but in the long run it is worth it...ballard will fit right in down in florida. panthers fans are going to love this guy, and the hip checks he lands every game (or at least attempts)!

June 21, 2008  03:50 PM ET

BENTLEY AND I ARE VERY PLEASED.

June 21, 2008  05:32 PM ET

Olli is a mess mentally. Toast. He never came back after slashing Zednick's neck. Cost the Panther's the best chance they had to make the playoffs in years. Horrible Captain too.
