How NBA is going after Donaghy

Hey, Timmy, about those shoes ... The NBA wants disgraced ex-referee Tim Donaghy, who admitted betting on games and claimed at least one playoff game was fixed, to pay for the sneakers he wore at work. The league is demanding repayment for $750 worth of black Nike sneakers Donaghy wore in the three seasons he bet on games he officiated. The petty demand is part of the NBA's overall claim seeking $1.4million in restitution from Donaghy, an amount based on the league's internal investigation and the ex-referee's compensation during the time he illegally gambled. The NBA makes no bones abouot going after Donaghy. Court papers demanding reimbursement for league costs lists a few unusual items. For example, NBA lawyers billed the league $1,575 for writing a memo about a meeting last summer with prosecutors, the FBI and for "press coverage." League lawyers also billed $225 for an "investigation of Judge Amon's calendar" before Donaghy pleaded guilty. The legal also wants to recouop costs for the numerous meetings between league lawyers and the feds before word of the investigation was leaked to the media.

Such a classy league. Sure, this will solve the referee problem and clean up the image of the League...

June 21, 2008  09:00 AM ET

Stern, this is just plain tacky. Give it up.

June 21, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Just do it!

June 21, 2008  09:54 AM ET

Forget trying to get the money back. Give some inmate $100 worth of cigarettes and a few candy bars to shank his little weasel ****.

June 21, 2008  10:18 AM ET

this cheat Donaghy is gonna think the league has been renamed in the hole

NBA (national battery of @rse-bashings)

hes gonna get his and stern will probably get off on it to - sick little prick

Whoever edited this rumor needs to go back to 3rd grade.

Jesus....how do you people even get jobs? I am surprised these are not written in crayon.

June 21, 2008  10:51 AM ET

Basically the thought here is: You screw us, we ****.

June 21, 2008  10:53 AM ET

The real dumb thing is why doesn't the league just let this GO
the more headlines.....good or bad..... is HEADLINES and a reminder as to the awful mess they have....
DUMB....especially for stern, who is brilliant

June 21, 2008  11:20 AM ET

I wonder if Donaghy, Pete Rose, Sir Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan frequent the same betting facilities ???

June 21, 2008  11:21 AM ET

Donaghy, remember Stern "made you do it..."?? Take him down with you. And one step further, I'd bet Stern would have the audacity to represent himself in court

June 21, 2008  11:33 AM ET

donaghy is giving 25-1 odds they won't get a dime from him!

June 21, 2008  12:41 PM ET

I'm not understanding. In my country, some cheating good. President lie, we go to war. Nobody care. We like war. Weighlifter take horse pill, head grow size of elephant sack. We don't care. We like win Olympics. But referee cheat so team lose, we care very much. We create large mob outside and then chop nose off whole family, so children say 'momma, why man have no nose?' And she say 'that what happen to man who smell badly.' You see. Chop nose off family, and this problem go away faster than you can say porky pig.

June 21, 2008  12:44 PM ET

I've been waiting for a reaction to this from the league and this is what they come up with. Stern is such an ****, an this doesn't convince that the league didn't know about it.

June 21, 2008  12:52 PM ET

What does this really accomplish? They are not asking for the shoes back because they are worn out and used. Isnt the shoes part of the referee atire, so really the nba should not be asking for reimbursement.

June 21, 2008  01:02 PM ET

Send the A.B after him so he can be a B-i-t-ch.They will take care of him!!

June 21, 2008  02:46 PM ET

the league should also sue David Stern to be re-imbursed of his slary, since he's done a sh** job of being commisioner

June 21, 2008  03:01 PM ET

One of the reasons that conspiracy theories continue unabated is because of dumb actions like this on the part of the NBA.

June 21, 2008  03:17 PM ET

On the heels of an NBA finals featuring two legendary teams, and getting great ratings, this is just plain WEAK. Stern is merely trying to intimidate others. Whether Stern likes it or not there seems to have been a bigger problem than one ref. This is an absolutely childish way of trying to solve the problem. Just plain petty. Making themselves look bad.

June 21, 2008  03:53 PM ET

Stern isn't going to win this in the Federal court or the court of public opinion. Whether you like Donaghey or not, he did work and the NBA owes him the money. Who's to say what Donaghey is saying about other ref isn't true. I find it hard to believe he was the only one involved, because one ref can't determine the outcome of a game.

If he was calling bogus fouls or not calling legitimate fouls, wouldn't the other two refs see that.

Adding FUEL to the fire. This is doing nothing but adding more negative attention to the NBA. I don't take up for Donaghy. He did a criminal act and should be punished. One thing that seems rather obvious though is that he did not act alone. The rigging of the 2002 playoffs which he described while using a lie detector should send red flags up everywhere. Where there is smoke there usually is fire. I see PLENTY of smoke.
