Only a few months after producing one of the richest football recruiting classes ever by a Miami-Dade County school, Northwestern had its first player of the Class of 2009 commit to a Division I college. Bulls coaches confirmed Friday that running back Daquan Hargrett, rated the No. 20 overall prospect in Dade by The Miami Herald, has orally committed to West Virginia. He has offers from South Florida, and Minnesota, as well as interest from FIU, Clemson and Buffalo.

This kid must have an impressive rap sheet to get an offer to WVU!

June 21, 2008  12:21 PM ET

I'm not a WVU hater by any means. But, if there's any Big East program high school kids should have serious questions about right now - ranging from a new head coach with a checkered past with players, to a program with a lawless image - it's West Virginia. We shall see.

June 21, 2008  12:26 PM ET

West Virginia wild and wonderful thats why the kids want to go there! Big for Bill Stewart to get such a big time recruit and keep this program going.

June 21, 2008  03:48 PM ET

this guy isn't a big time recruit! he's 20th in Dade county and a 3 star on rivals. hope you like him WVA

June 21, 2008  04:18 PM ET

"This kid must have an impressive rap sheet to get an offer to WVU!" LOL!!!!!! I got 7up all over my keyboard!

June 21, 2008  07:36 PM ET

I am just wondering why a 3 star recruit is getting publicity. Oh yeah, I forgot it's the slow time for sports news.

The kid may be a good player and if so then good for WVU. USF offered him a spot at the table which means he can play. His character is the only unknown.

June 21, 2008  10:30 PM ET

Most of those schools have good running games so if they like him, he's probably ok.

June 21, 2008  10:31 PM ET

Devine (sp?) is good enough that he probably won't stay long and this guy will be able to play.

June 21, 2008  11:42 PM ET

what i dont understnad is why you guys prove to know nothing, you see the past with rich rod and you assume wvu is brining in the same players. Well if you paid attetion to wvu youd also notice that stew has kicked many def starters off the team for character issues, so how bout you realize stew wont have it, before you make baseless comments :) must be like a marshall fan or something

June 22, 2008  01:04 AM ET

WVU is in the news spotlight thanks tot he Rich Rod fiasco. The truth is, other schools have a lot more trouble makers and career criminals than WVU yet they fly under the radar. Maybe it's just expected at other 'national programs' that it's no big deal..

eastcoastkeith is kidding, right? I wonder if eastcoastkeith reads/speaks the English language. I wonder if he has even read any of evidence that has been made public AGAINST RR. WVU has had bad press because of RR and his agent. WVU has not been in any more trouble than any other school in the nation. The new coach has a past, says eastcoastkeith. eastcoastkeith, are you French? A coach with a past is Beamer, Sampson, Saban, Petrino, etc....take a good looksie at Stewart and WVU, inform yourself before you bore us all with your useless posts. (for those of you that don't know, keith attends a rival school that has been embarrassed by WVU)

if eastcoastkeith wants to bash a school, team, and coach, perhaps he should travel out to the west coast and hate on USC. Hey, eastcoastkeith, you keep on being one of the 84% of the doubters that do not think WVU can beat OU/Duke.

June 22, 2008  09:26 PM ET

Never understand why people knock a 3 star recruit. WVU has been doing this for years. They get 2-3 star recruits that they see potential in and turn them into succesful football players. Pat White and Super Steve were both 3 stars, so don't knock'em.

June 23, 2008  12:28 AM ET

yeah but that was under the good recruiters and talent evaluaters in the rich rod staff...theres no way that this new regime will be able to find the goldmine of 2-3 star recruits that they have the last 4-5 years...

Stewart is a moron...look at his pevious coaching experience and record and issues and then tell me WVU will be successful in the long haul

June 23, 2008  12:43 AM ET

Aaron1185...that was under the previously unknown staff of RR...look who is doing the prime recruiting at WVU...not Stew...his name is Doc Holliday...maybe you've heard of him...if not, he recruited teams at Florida and NC State...and I'm pretty sure his Florida team won a National Championship, handily, against an "unbeatable" Ohio State team...sense sarcasm? you should...keep reaching

June 23, 2008  12:46 AM ET

Oh...and by the way aaron...look more closely at his prior experience, namely at VMI (btw, you got your own criticisms from second rate sports beat writers)...now go to google, look up vmi prior coaches/records and you will see that nobody could do anything with VMI since the early 80s...and they were only .500 then...you can't do anything with VMI because they get no-star recruits...oh, and may I also remind you who actually wins games...the players on the field!

June 23, 2008  01:30 AM ET

HAH nice one, but players aren't all morons, they know that the head coach is the one that they're buying into and whoever you have at recruiting is just the one to get them to the point of seriously considering it

btw- I didnt get my info from the coumn on SI, but rather from general knowledge... If stewat was a star coach he could've done something with VMI... and none of his other stops were anything spectacular either...

WVU is headed towards averageness over the long haul... they won't be able to keep bringing in the #s of quality players to maintain NC calibur teams for more than the next two years...talk now but it will play itself out

June 23, 2008  07:34 AM ET

Aaron, you are correct in that only time will tell how Stew will do running the program but there is no doubt that he has surrounded himself with more talented coaches than Rod ever had. He has put the football team and state first instead of himself by taking a lower salary so that the extra money could bring in people like Holiday.

Stew's record at VMI may be crap but then so was Rod's for the first 2 years or so until he got Pat White. Without him, Rod and WVU would still be in the crapper.

One thing that is known though is that when the game is on the line and the team is playing for something important (chance for NC compared to BCS OK game) then Stew definitely showed he could get the players motivated and call more than 3 plays. Unlike Rod who has a longer list of big games that he has choked in.

June 23, 2008  02:34 PM ET

Aaron...conveniently, you ignore the comments about Doc Holliday and how we will bring in better recruits that Coach Rod's staff ever could...watch Rod implode at Michigan...as to whether Stew is the long-term solution WVU needed, that will take time to note...but Stew's support staff is great...oh, and by the way, the defensive coordinator stayed back at WVU, and if I remember last season correctly, the WVU defense was the biggest "surprise" to the nation, and it got much, much better through the season
Pugz also brings up a good point, stew will call more than three plays...the only reason WVU lost two games last season was because Coach Rod didn't get his head out his *** and adapt to the defensive schemes South Florida and Pitt were throwing at him...with a more talented coach, that very same WVU team would have been undefeated...it's so funny how much credit everyone gives to Coach Rod, and while he was a good coach, he doesn't deserve to be mentioned amongst the top ten in the nation today...all he did was tweak the spread offense a very minimal degree
