Jays GM apologizes to Reds
Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi admitted that he'd made an error when he said Reds outfielder Adam Dunn "doesn't have a passion to play the game." On Wednesday, Ricciardi told a caller on a radio phone-in show that trying to trade for Dunn was not a move the Jays were considering. But in a report last night, Ricciardi indicated that he had apologized to Reds GM Walt Jocketty and had tried to get in touch to do the same with Dunn directly. The Reds will be in Toronto for an interleague series with the Jays. Dunn had responded earlier yesterday to Ricciardi's comments, calling him "a clown."

No "passion" for the game?! Adam Dunn has an intense passion for strikeouts, home runs, walks, and misplayed fly balls.

Ricciardi needs a boot up his ****. Really, everything he said is probably true, but why attack someone like that publicly? Couldn't he have said that Dunn is a good power hitter, but isn't what we need at this time?
J.P. better be on the defensive... for his own job.

Dunn is my new favourite player. Anyone who publicly calls JP a clown is awesome in my books. When are the Jays gonna fire JP and let Bryan Colangelo run the team??

Yeah, OK it was an error. But the point is, Ricciardi still said what he said. As far as everything I have read or heard, he did not say "it came out the wrong way" or anything like that. (someone please let me know if I missed that type of statement yet which would make this comment null and void)
So the fact still remains, that a GM of a troubled team still had these thoughts about Dunn, and shared them with a caller (and the public) of a freaking radio show. Wow.

Honestly, what bothers me most about this is that he IS apologizing. I mean, either he didn't mean it (in which case, why the hell would he say it?) or he DID mean it (in which case, why the hell is he apologizing for it?). I think apologizing to the Reds and Dunn right now comes across as "I said something for maximum public effect, but I didn't really mean it and don't want to piss you all off." If he wanted to keep a good relationship going with Dunn and/or Jocketty, he should have thought twice about the comments. And by the way: what the hell is a GM doing making those comments anyway? Isn't a GM's job description -- among other things -- to act as the public face of the front office? One would think he would have a bit more tact and diplomacy than that.
Then again, as a Red Sox fan, anything that cripples the Jays' ability to challenge for the division title or AL wild card is good for me.

I think Dunn is among the more underrated players in the NL. apart for a consistent 40 hrs, he has am excellent OBP. No speed, glove or hitting for average---so he's not an all-star. But not a bad bat in the right lineup.

"I think Dunn is among the more underrated players in the NL"
And that is why you are not a GM.......
he is dave kingman
- he has NEVER had a season where he has had more hits than strikeouts
- he in the top 3 in strikeouts every year in the league
he is someone you CANNOT build a line-up around because he is a strikeout machine- check out his post-season stats........THERE ARE NONE

Ricciardi made a poor choice in not realizing, once you speak on the radio, you can run from any misques. That being said, his performance as the GM in Toronto has not been horrible. He has had a very difficult job because of the division they are in. Place the Jays in the central and they might run over all but Chicago. They still have one of the best pitching staffs in the A.L. (not the best but top 6).
He deserves to play out his contract and then the ownership should decide whether or not to resign him.
