Vijay's remarks anger Casey

Paul Casey has revealed the depth of his anger at Vijay Singh after the former world No 1's attack on British golfers before the US Open last week. Singh claimed that the likes of Casey were "too comfortable" and lacked a winning mentality. With Tiger Woods out of the way for the rest of the season recovering from a knee injury, Casey should be looking forward to an assault on the two remaining majors and making a determined push for a place in the Europe Ryder Cup team. But he is furious that Singh has questioned his work ethic and launched a stinging attack on the Fijian. "I am angry, he has no clue what I do, so how can he comment," Casey, who had a second-round 68 to move into contention at the BMW International Open in Munich yesterday, said. "I can only speak for the guys I know well, like Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Ian Poulter, but we are all working incredibly hard and I think it is an unfair shot from Vijay. I would like to see him try to live with me in the gym for a couple of hours. He does not know us and he has no evidence to back up what he says. We are all very frustrated that we have not won majors and that our results have not been as good as we would have liked. But it is not down to lack of effort and perhaps when we do make a breakthrough then it will open the door to a lot more wins."

Vijay your comments are equal to what I just deposited (in enormous quantities) in my toilet !!!

Vijay is right, and I'll take it a step further. Euopean players have beatdown the US in the Ryder Cup. But when its comes to Major Championship like The Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA Championship, european players have become SOFT. In the last 35 majors including this year's Masters and US Open, European players have won a total of 1 major. Granted, Tiger has something to do with it with13 majors during that spam. But it still doesn't excuses why european players haven't done well in the majors recently.

who cares???????????????????????

June 21, 2008  11:46 AM ET

How many euros have won majors in the last 3-4 years?? hmmmmmm none. How about Monty in majors/??? ummmm scared.
So why angry at Vijay for stating the obvious? get over it dude, no one cares how much you bench press at the gym. Show me game on the course.
European losers!!!

And this whole stupid issue is why the leaders of the PGA are going to hate the rest of the Tiger-less season......Nuf said..

Seems golf is getting a little NBA-like in the mud-slinging area at least. South Africans Sabbortini and Goosen's challenges to Tiger; Singh's doubt of European player's work ethics and now Casey's response seem to display the level of frustration at only one of them getting the bulk of the publicity and respect for being a winner, a superstar, and an ATHLETE. The rest seem to be just golfers, which isn't a bad thing, I don't think. I would say to all of them be like a Tiger....WIN. Win often and consistently and all the negative chatter will end.

June 21, 2008  04:02 PM ET

Golfers are athletes? No. I have said before, and surely will again, they are not. My reasoning is that you or I can hit the occasional great shot. Can you or I beat the NBA's best, or hit off the best pitchers in baseball? Stop the great football players, or win against a tennis player? Be serious. Point Vijay was making was spot on. Win. Maybe his comments will rile someone enough to get the fire going for an entire tournament rather than a couple rounds. And sure you'd rather beat Tiger, the point is to go out and beat the best, but be the best that is out there NOW.

First of all golfers are athletes. That is indiputable. The good ones work fulltime practicing and working out. Getting a card is an incredibly difficult trial and that is only the beginning as the competition is so strong, and its not like team sports, it is one guy against an entire team of competitors, all gunning for the leader.

Second, Vijay has long been known for his apparently incurable ignorance.

Petulant golfers whining over each others comments? Is this all the golf media has to offer us?

June 21, 2008  08:39 PM ET

First Vijay won't play in a tournament in which Annika Sorenstam has been invited to play. Now the comment about British Golfers.

First, Sorenstam is a better golfer than Vijay could ever hope to be.

Second, the attack on Paul Casey may be warranted, but before attacking British golfers in general, maybe he should look at the World Golf Rankings, where he happens to be two spots behing Justin Rose of England. These are especially big words coming from the guy ranked behind Steve Stricker.

June 21, 2008  08:40 PM ET

Sorry, Vijay is two spots BEHIND Justin Rose, not behing (as only President Bush believes that's an actual word.

When defending golfers as athletes, Southern Man wrote: ".... and its not like team sports, it is one guy against an entire team of competitors, all gunning for the leader.

I like golf, but this defense does little to defend golfers as athletes. And, what sports don't have everyone else gunning for the leader? In reality, golfers are really competing against their own mastery of skill and course on the day they compete. If they are athletes, they are certainly a lower tier. I mean in my worst physical shape, I can walk 18 holes a day with little problem.

June 21, 2008  09:40 PM ET

But can you dominate and master the golf course and every other player? Doubtful...or else you would be doing it. Obviously, anyone can walk the course.

Vijay may be right, or he may be wrong. Either way, he's a dick and should shut his trap. You haven't won on the PGA tour in almost a year and a half, Veej.
