Hossa turns down Penguins offer

Marian Hossa and his agent informed the Penguins on Saturday that a multi-year contract offer that averages just over $7 million annually was not enough to prevent him from testing the free-agent market July 1. Penguins general manager Ray Shero said yesterday after the NHL draft at Scotiabank Place that the offer may not be on the table when Hossa becomes an unrestricted free agent. "It's very fair, I believe," Shero said of the Penguins' offer -- details of which he did not reveal. "There was a firm offer on the table." The Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks are two teams likely to make pitches for Hossa on July 1.

So much for Hossa's previous claims he would play for the Pens for less money.
Good-bye Marion...Hope you enjoy mediocrity in Beantown. You just opened the door for Shero to get busy to move past your egotistical self and work on the rest of his team.
Looks like Malkin won't be going anywhere soon now. The Pens don't have time to be wasting on Hossa any longer. Hossa has just provided any potential suiters once again about what he is really all about.
Himself...so beware guys.

Money or glory, glory or money?? Well, better him than Malkin. Now the Pens can concentrate on sewing up Malkin and Fleury, the youngsters who, along with Crosby, will provide the bedrock of any dynasty they hope to attain.

What's with the Avatar Seabird?...tsk tsk tsk.

June 22, 2008  09:30 AM ET

It's depressing how it so often turns out to be about the money.
I can't imagine what BGM will do if Shero makes a pitch for Hossa ......

June 22, 2008  09:34 AM ET

*Regier, sorry

June 22, 2008  09:34 AM ET

OH MY GOD WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME? CHIARELLI FOR GODS SAKES!

June 22, 2008  09:35 AM ET

I don't think he's gone quite yet. The article said he wanted to see what was available. The only way he moves is if some GM makes him a monster offer.

Yeah stop on by and give us your views on the draft and any trades. Right now we're blasting Philly for the Umberger deal

June 22, 2008  10:02 AM ET

He's going to get more money if he tests the market. Sorry Pittsburgh fans, not everyone takes hometown discounts.

June 22, 2008  10:08 AM ET

a man cant live on less than $7mil a year?mercenary.

June 22, 2008  10:14 AM ET

He's gone MH.
Shero made him a good offer and Hossa shunned it. Screw em...move on!

June 22, 2008  10:16 AM ET

And furthermore: Hossa knows bloody well what Shero is up against. If he had any respect for the Team and the Franchise he would have made up his mind. That offer will not be there after July 1. Shero has too much work to do.

What's with the Avatar Seabird?...tsk tsk tsk.

LOL The non - Avatar is from my creaky old iMac at home. It wouldn't let me put up the bird for some reason. Off to the Dew Cup ( skating /BMX pro comp ) in Baltimore with my son. More later.

June 22, 2008  10:43 AM ET

He played in Pit for like 3 months, I don't see why he owes them a hometown discount.

June 22, 2008  11:05 AM ET

Damn straight he don't owe nobody nothing!

June 22, 2008  11:33 AM ET

he'll most likely end up with the blackhawks if he wants to succeed because we have such a young young superstar core and adding him would only sweeten the deal.

if he wants to stay close and maybe become THE star on a team then go for the bruins...

June 22, 2008  11:35 AM ET

the only thing is with as much as the blackhawks have already dished out this offseason...and with Kane and Toews being paid in a couple years...idk if a real long term deal is in the works for Hossa...we can give him the money..maybe not the years...
