Can Walker still be Raiders leader?

Despite coming off knee surgery and being dumped by his last team, the new wide receiver represented leadership on a unit starving for it. The massive contract he signed implied as much, and his veteran status put him among the few who could even pretend to qualify. Though Javon Walker's curious past beat the drums of skepticism, this was his opportunity to silence the Broncos, Packers and other doubters. New team, new town, chance to set a new example. So much for that. While partying in Las Vegas last weekend, Walker reportedly spent $15,000 on champagne, was photographed spraying much of it on strangers, then wound up beaten and hospitalized. He was a victim and, thankfully, he's expected to make a complete recovery. But the Raiders are victims, too. They need leaders and thought they had one, only to watch him flunk his first semester.

It is the Raiders we are talking about..

" this was his opportunity to silence the Broncos, Packers and other doubters."

umm, he already had an opportunity to silence the Packer doubters and he failed miserably at that. The only thing he can hope to accomplish in Oakland is to silence the Bronco doubters and this idiot isn't off to a great start.

I bet he first wants to " lead" the police to the person/s who gave him that beat down in Vegas..

June 22, 2008  09:35 AM ET

Javon "Will" lead the Raiders, but in the wrong direction! His selfishness will implode the team from within just like it did the Broncos and Packers...

June 22, 2008  09:41 AM ET

I mean, champagne
California on the brain

June 22, 2008  10:34 AM ET

This dumb **** got what he deserved. And the Raiders will get what they deserve for signing the stupid PoS.

June 22, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Nevada police have said that someone has turned themselves in for the beating and assault.

Police said that they have also seized her purse as evidence.

June 22, 2008  10:41 AM ET

He wants to win, so he can spray the team with champagne in the locker room.
Walker is a prime example of the prototypical ignorant minded athelete of today.

Why would anyone the Raiders front office this this two time loser would suddenly become a leader? Why do so many sports writers equate big name and/or big mouth with being a leader?

June 22, 2008  02:18 PM ET

and how they bashed Ted Thompson for not keepin him,how he let go of a great WR,,lol,,,guess Teddy knew all along that this guy was stain,,15000 in bubbly and a 100,000 watch,,,some idiots got too much money,he should have died on the pavement, that way he could have gotten the glory he seeks, the raiders could have had his number on all thier helmets and he could have achieved sainthood, just like his friend that died in his arms

June 22, 2008  02:35 PM ET

When was Javon Walker ever a leader?? He like many atheletes is an overpaid bust. Didn't he have like one good season with the Pack and left them hanging only to do nothing since!? Hate that happened to him, but why even talk about him. If he had of kept his **** at home he probably wouldn't have been left for dead in an alleyway.!

June 22, 2008  02:41 PM ET

Wozzman, I think that was a little harsh my man. Not trying to wish death on anyone buddy! Tighten up bro!

June 22, 2008  04:24 PM ET

What? Yet another lame sports writer trying to make an athlete out to something he isn't... and that would be perfect.

The VICTIM here was Walker. I guess based on what you have all said PELE is a bum too. Local news reports say soccer legend Pele was held at gunpoint by a band of youths and robbed of a gold necklace, his cell phone and a watch.

The incident -- which took place on June 13 but only made public now -- occurred near the city of Santos in southern Sao Paulo state. Pele's car was stopped near a slum by at least 10 young men armed with pistols and knives, the respected news magazine Veja reported on its Web site.

The report said Pele was riding on the passenger side of the car and did not report the incident to police.

Repeated calls to Pele's office went unanswered Sunday.

Get real, neither one could anticipate being robbed... sure it would be nice had Walker stayed home and watched reruns of Hogan's Heroes like the rest of us... but guess what? He had money to burn and a grown man chose to go to Vegas. So what? Imagine the tables turned, how many of you hypocrites wouldn't have done the same. Tearing down someone gives meaning to your pathetic lives...huh?

June 22, 2008  04:47 PM ET

LOL GFM, Hyporicitcal??? LOL....LOL....ok I will stop laughing. There is nothing wrong with going to Veges, spending money. But...........If you start spraying people with champaign, excpect you might get the wrong person wet, the excpect your **** to get beat.

June 22, 2008  07:30 PM ET

A leader in stupidity maybe - why would that subject even come up ??? Oh it's the Raiders !!!

June 22, 2008  08:22 PM ET

Uhh, was he a leader in Denver? Green Bay? Does he win "leadership" in Oakland by default? - He drew the short straw...ha ha
