Possible Notre Dame candidates

The search firm employed by Notre Dame to help find a new athletic director, Parker Executive Search, has reached out to at least one prospective candidate: Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi, who promptly said thanks but no thanks. That alone isn't much of a shocker, but the important part is this: If Maturi was contacted, it stands to reason that other prospective candidates -- SMU's Steve Orsini, Tulsa's Bubba Cunningham, MAC commissioner Rick Chryst -- have received calls as well. That said, search firms typically cast a wide net to create a large pool of prospects. It certainly doesn't mean the process is remotely close to conclusion, or even at full-bore.

ur worthless local boy, grow up

Barry Alvarez. Please. I don't want someone from SMU (death penalty), Tulsa, or the MAC. Give us a football mind who is an ND grad.

You are dreaming. Alvarez would either have to have the biggest ego in the world - okay, I'll give you that - or be crazy, since he's got a good gig. (One that he had a lot to do with building up.) Maybe Domer alums can put together a package he can't refuse. Better break the piggy banks, though.

IrishR#1 - Steve Orsini
Athletics director at SMU the last year, Orsini has made some notable moves during his career in athletic administration. While the AD at Central Florida, Orsini hired George O???Leary as football coach, and while at SMU, he hired former Irish basketball coach Matt Doherty. He made an even bigger splash by recently signing former Hawaii head coach June Jones for the football program. Orsini is a 1978 Notre Dame graduate and served as the special teams captain on the 1977 national championship team. He and fellow captain Terry Eurick joined with Charlie Weis on the campus softball champs.

Orsini would be a GREAT AD @ ND. His wief's family still lives in South Bend.

I cant believe NBC renewed with ND. Their ratings walked the plank last year and this year's squad is only supposed to be slightly better. Ouch.

Cassidy,

That's why games are played on the field & not on paper.

June 22, 2008  01:35 PM ET

You are right. On paper last year Notre Dame was supposed to be a lot better than their record. Good point.

Sexton Sexton......That's why games are played on the field & not on paper.

That has been NDs problem in a nutshell.

The Irish need someone who actually knows a thing or two about the football program. A former head coach or assistant would be the best option. Alvarez is the ideal choice, but it is doubtful that he would take it. I'm perfectly fine with keeping the interim AD. She's been around the program for a long time-back when we were winning-and worked under Krause. She should get the job.

If you say so.

I agree, as long as she learned more from Krause then White!

June 22, 2008  08:14 PM ET

Sexton ..you are probably right, but ND is not likely to make her the AD. I think they are more in to the name than the substance. It is all about perception , sad to say.

June 22, 2008  10:30 PM ET

I have to disagree with you 50yearfan. ND got spoiled by having the consistency of the same athletic director (Moose Krause) for over 30 years. Since then it has been a scramble. I think they will focus their search on an ND grad, someone who looks at the position as a vocation as well as a career move. In other words, they (I believe) want someone that wants this to be their last career move.

June 23, 2008  12:02 AM ET

Seeing as we will never pry Alvarez away from WI, Sexton has convinced me that Steve Orsini is a good choice. He seems to have made some good moves for a program that is in the dumps, plus he has already stated interest in the job.

WHO CARES

June 23, 2008  08:55 AM ET

Notre Dame will be fine. We can only go up

June 23, 2008  10:03 AM ET

Find someone who can eat brats like Charlie Weis and who would be willing to take the fall for Weis' failed program so that ND can keep him around a little longer.

Actually, I think Local Boy has it pretty much dead on!

I thought that was rather funny, localboy54, and I have no angst towards ND.
