Whilst Chelsea has already been linked with a move for the Hamburg man, the News of the World has today reported that Liverpool has now also joined the chase for the midfielder.

if its true they going to bin swp and malouda it isnt that crazy.how much do hamburg want for him anyway?

June 22, 2008  12:09 PM ET

They will be chasing him less after his lackluster effort against the Russians

I'd love to see VdV join my beloved Atletico Madrid...
He has some spanish ties, so it could make sense. He's very expensive though (around 25 or 30 mil).

Is it me or is Chelsea becoming the "new" Real Madrid? Linked to virtually every player on the market. Not that I'm a fan of either team but I think Van de Vaart would be a much better fit at Liverpool than at Chelsea. Chelsea's sure to bring in Deco once they get over the price haggling with Barcelona and Dinho could still be in play for them.

VDV was being linked to Chelsea in the Jan transfer window, but I can't see this huge influx of Mids to Chelsea. Although Scolari has already stated a mass clearout. Anyone else keep hearing Derrick Rae say Van Der Fart yesterday? I'm know I'm getting to old for those jokes but I couldn't help but laugh.

Van der Vaart will leave hamburg. He has an option in his contract that says he can leave next year for 1mio ???, so Hamburg would be smart to sell him now, he already said about 20 times, that he wants to play in spain...

June 22, 2008  05:42 PM ET

Van Der Vaart said he would love to play in Spain (his mom is Spanish). Valencia has been close w/ VdV but with the fiasco at the club, its not gonna happen. Juventus was also interested last summer as well and that was close to being realized.

I would have sworn VdV signed an extension w/ Hamburg

I wouldn't mind him heading over to Anfield but I doubt that will happen. If Liverpool don't get him hope Man. U or Chelsea doesn't either. Maybe he'll go to Juventus if he doesn't come to Liverpool.

Can quicker see Van der Vaart at United than I can Chelsea. Chelsea has way too many midfielders as it is right now.

June 23, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Yeah Chelsea have a ton of midfielders and they don't need another man to make the headache any bigger. They need to get rid of a few first and then maybe buy a new player. They have enough midfielders for three squads.

big chaco:

there is no extension. he has a contract for another 2 years at hsv. after 2008-2009 he can leave for 1 million euros, in 2 years for nothing. If hamburg is smart, they sell him now.

Definetely said a lot of times how much he would prefer to play in spain. He plays just for the money, so maybe the premier league comes into the game..

I think I saw that guy hit the ball with his head one time. It was cool.

One of the reasons HSV has been slow to sell him is becauase when they do, Ajax will get a large chuck of the transfer fee, meaning even if they sell him for 20 million or so, Hamburg will only see a fraction of this. It all depends how much the directors at HSV consider him worth to the club.

If he wants to go to Spain, he'll end up in Spain. Liverpool's targets are well known, and Van Der Vaart isn't one of them. Liverpool are trying to sign 1 or 2 midfielders. The rumours about Villa are equally absurd, as they don't need another forward in a one 4-2-3-1 formation. No, Benitez want's Valencia's Silva if anyone.

At the moment he's playing Kuyt out of position just to accommodate him in the team. So even if they sell Peter Crouch, I doubt they'll get another forward. They have their wingback, and with 1 or 2 midfielders they have covered every position that Benitez has intimated he's needed for the last 2 or 3 seasons.

Personally I think Kuyt will move into the Crouch's subs role, with Gareth Barry, Steven Gerrard and either Bentley or Silva behind Torres.

Well if Ronaldo goes and with Giggs age, I could see him coming

I couldn't have said it better Jeeves. Anderson has plenty of time to learn the game with his age and I have always loved van der Vaart. They need another attacking mildfielder with Scholes aging with Giggs and with Ronaldo leaving.
