Rangers let Avery test market

Sean Avery is headed to unrestricted free agency. His days as a Ranger are numbered - and the number is 10 and counting. Rangers GM Glen Sather spent the entire, 30-minute seventh round of the NHL draft sitting with Avery's agent Pat Morris Saturday. And after Morris made his pitch, complete with a folder full of statistical evidence, he emerged all but convinced that Avery won't be re-signed before becoming an unrestricted free agent at noon on July 1. "We had an interesting dialogue, and there appears to be disagreement over what Sean's value is to the New York Rangers," Morris said.

Avery is an idiot. Sather isn't.

There just isn't a way of keeping this guy from being a first-rate nut-job. Yes, he is really effective when he is playing his agitating game, but he crosses the line so much even his teammates can't stand him. He is too dumb to realize his antics has cost him big bucks. If he toned it down just a little, Sather or anyone else would probably agree to pay him his 3-3.5 million a year to score 20 goals and be a real leader on the ice. However, his shenanigans and unpredictable behaviour make it hard to trust him with that type of contract.

I wonder how much Avery thinks he's worth? Maybe he should go to Ottowa. From what I've read on here it sounds like they could use some toughening up.

Nice new Avatar BTW. I think both the Leafs and the Caps did well in the draft, no?

June 22, 2008  09:00 AM ET

At least he's not likely to want to come to Edmonton (sorry Hank I know you'd like it).

Congrats on Schenn Baun-ded - are you still happy today :)

June 22, 2008  09:18 AM ET

Quite happy in fact Oilers4.
I like the pick up of Jimmy Hayes also. Big 6'5 winger with good hands and speed. Should have gone in the first round...I think the Leafs did well at the draft.

I picked up this little gem today...so typical of a Canadian Hockey Dad...LOL.
This is Schenn's Father talking about his 2 sons...

"They are picking their towels off the floor, lately," said Jeff, making them laugh. "Usually we feed them, then they go for a nap and we feed them again. Ahh, they're a couple of good kids who don't give us too much grief at all."

Great comment - I can identify with that myself!!

Avery is a good pick up at 3-4 mil...anything over that he's dreaming. He was a little off when he was with the Wings...then when he went to LA he cracked full time...now he's just a wacko that can play hockey fairly well

June 22, 2008  10:03 AM ET

I wanted him at 3.3-3.5 million for 3 years. Wah.

So could BGM's Dad...hahahahahahahaha

June 22, 2008  10:12 AM ET

Otherone-Avery is a dork of the grandest fashion...you should be hoping the Rangers steer clear of him. He is BAD NEWS man!

June 22, 2008  10:14 AM ET

Where were you yesterday, Baun, when I was getting ragged on over this guy?!!

June 22, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Not a good idea

June 22, 2008  10:47 AM ET

Considering Tucker is getting 4 mil, and he got what, 4 goals last year, there's no wonder Avery wants his payday. Like OtherOne said, if he could take 3.3 mil a year I'd definetly take him.

June 22, 2008  10:48 AM ET

He is a dork. But I want him back. He can skate and play when he's healthy and the Rangers numbers are much better with him (and Jagr).

June 22, 2008  10:49 AM ET

Good god, I'll bet Tucker wants even more than 4 million. That washed up scrub cracks under pressure too.

June 22, 2008  12:35 PM ET

Avery in Montreal...don't make me laugh. Gainey & Carbo and Avery...yeah right....LOL
Tucker is done as a Leaf Otherone...they will buy him out. The Leafs are going to be a lot bigger, tougher and more defensively minded under Wilson. They also have some extra bucks available to go hunting. Several guys had off years under Maurice as well as injuries. Wilson will pull out the weeds and get this team on track.

June 22, 2008  12:37 PM ET

the rangers need avery more than avery needs the rangers, the rangers record with him in the line up and him out of the line up proves that

June 22, 2008  01:05 PM ET

Avery's record proves nothing. He is a side-show Bob whose roster spot can be filled by many with better skills and less issues. His act has gone stale.

June 22, 2008  01:06 PM ET

Avery is an idiot who is looking for way too much money than he is worth. If he leaves New York, how is his career with Vogue supposed to take off after his hockey career. Better sign with LA haha

June 22, 2008  01:13 PM ET

Baun-ded....i feed myself!! I think i do anyways. LOL.

Tucker doesnt make 4 million,he makes 3 million per year. I wonder why they havent bought him out yet?

Anyways......Avery's worth.......you know some crazed GM will pay him over 4 million per year. I think his value is at 3.5 million max. Wah.
