Tigers want new shortstop in '09

Tigers shortstop Edgar Renteria is well-liked in the clubhouse, thanks to his strong work ethic and perpetual calm. And he has produced in the clutch, hitting .333 (10-for-30) with runners in scoring position and two outs through Friday, according to STATS LLC. But he no longer has great range in the field, despite smooth hands and an accurate arm. And his batting average has dropped considerably, from .332 in the National League last season to .269 this year. He will be 33 in August. So, with almost half the season gone, it's time to wonder whether Renteria will be the Tigers' everyday shortstop in 2009.

Do the Tigers want an new SS or does the Detroit Free Press?

Important question, Cheesy.

Both Boston and Atlanta already saw that Renteria can't play shortstop effectively in the bigs any more. Detroit could stick with him if they were strong defensively at other positions - they're not.

Renteria is probably going to have to try a new position. Detroit definitely needs a new shortstop to help the D.

It has gone past that time.

Stunningly ignorant grammatical errors make your point that much more credible. If not for clarity of communication, at least learn to use English correctly for the sake of your own self-respect.

only reason the Braves traded him was Escobar is younger and cheaper and we needed pitching and got another pitching steal from the tigers for a player that everyone else with common sense knew was a better NL player then AL player

June 22, 2008  05:50 PM ET

Renteria is far better offensively in the NL. He should go back to a NL team. Detroit doesn't really need the offensive help with their lineup but once his defense starts to slack they need to unload him

I can't stand T&R's that lead you in with a headline that doesn't coincide at all with the actual "story." All this excerpt says is that Renteria is having a bad season. I can figure that out for myself, thanks.

This is why Truth & Rumors sucks.

Well the Tigers have Cale Iorg in Single A who's a good young prospet but he wouldn't make an immediate impact on the team right now. He's at least two years away. Danny Worth who's currently playing in Double A would probably be the next minor league option but I don't think the Tigers view him as highly as Iorg. As far as free agency goes the pickings are weak (and that's putting it kindly) at the SS position. The only one worth mentioning is Rafael Furcal but he'll be 31 in August.

Yee-Haw!! Boston wins!!!

Why don't they just blow up the whole team again - you can't trade for chemistry !!!
