Can Popovich stomach Smith?

The one who makes the most sense for the Spurs is the one with the least sense. That would be J.R. Smith, the flawed diamond of this summer's free-agent class. He has been everything the Spurs are not, and he also has everything the Spurs need. So he's worth a look. And if the Spurs go in that direction on July 1, and if they interview Smith, then what follows will hinge on this: Can Gregg Popovich see something he likes in someone he shouldn't? Next season might hinge on it, too. The Spurs likely won't get enough from the draft to help them immediately, even if they find a way to move up. The other free agents are equally uninspiring. Role players are available, not much more. But if he's open to the Spurs, and Popovich is open to sitting down with him, a franchise-changing decision would come down to one thing. Popovich's gut.

Pop won a championship with Stephen Jackson getting a bunch of minutes. If anyone can make this work, Pop can.

Very Very Very Interesting,

I think it's a mistake to assume that the Spurs can't get any help at number 26. With the top half of the draft trying to land a point guard, there is more than one "diamond in the rough" at the bottom of the 1st round.

get em if u can u need youth he came out of high school a while back he is still young n maybe under dat system he can become great

The Spurs can use the spark that young J.R. Smith can bring to their conservative team. Are Popovich and the Spurs willing to bring thug [looking] players into their fold? The way things are going, it's going to happen sooner or later!

there r enuf rings in that lockerroom the straten enyone out. Not a surs fan but nobody does it better in the NBA.

This is interesting. J.R. Smith hmmm? Well, I look at it this way if they do wind up drafting him, Gregg can train him then once Duncan retires Pop will probably go too (many speculate) and if he does Smith could become the next leader of the Spurs. As far as Popovich stomaching him, well if Smith is that wild let's hope Pop has a strong stomach.

This is risky to say the least. He could come in and clash with the coach and the team and cause their great chemistry to explode. Or if he gets on the same page he could be a great pickup for them.

June 22, 2008  06:05 PM ET

Personally I would go for it. I think he will be a good soldier with a team that can win and is a threat to make it to the Finals every year like the Spurs.

I don't know about J.R. Smith, but anythings possible!!

June 22, 2008  08:17 PM ET

R(eal) S(ports) you are an idiot, how can they draft him? he already plays for the nuggets, he is becoming a free agent ,dumbutt

it is funny how people just post for the pleasura of posting, but know nothing about the subject...

I like Kite busting people out...ha ha.

1. To the 2nd comment from the guy busting on Pops- you obviously don't know your coaches. Pops is a great coach and has earned it- 4 rings. His players love him.

2. J.R. Smith wouldn't get too far with a bad attitude in San An. There is too much discipline in the locker room for him to go all Pacman!!!

June 22, 2008  09:58 PM ET

Say all you want about J.R. Smith..that he's a character risk, that he plays absolutely no 'D" (then who on the Nuggests does!), that he's undiciplined (jacks up too many shots). But you can't deny that he would be a definite upgrade over Finley and Barry. Granted he'll have to adjust to a slower, more half court type of game. But even with that said his athleticism is such that he can still create his own shot and has no problem taking people off the dribble. And if anyone can provide him the "tough love" and discipline he needs to become a more well rounded player I can't think of a better coach to take on such a task than Pop. Trust me, Pop will make sure he get's back on 'D'. The Spurs need an infusion of youth and atheticism in the worst way and the possible addition of J.R. would be a welcome addition to the team in my opinion.

If POP wants to win next year or 2010 he should do the deal it makes them younger and more atletic, two things they need

June 22, 2008  11:58 PM ET

I think that Maggette is a better fit and more athletic and plays defense if they can get him from the Clippers. JR Smith is very inconsistent and likes to hoist threes when he's out on a fast break.

June 23, 2008  01:49 AM ET

He'll have more tattos than the whole Spurs team! but he would be a great spark off the bench, get ginobli as a starter and deal finley or somthin
