Why Ravens may start Flacco

Joe Flacco has had to absorb a lot of information in a short period. There have been a lot of long days. He would arrive at Ravens headquarters at 5:45 a.m., even though he acknowledges he is not a morning person. He would begin with a workout, go to a two-hour meeting and head to practice. After lunch, he would have another meeting and watch some more film on his own before finally going home for dinner. And when it was time for practice, Flacco was one of the players who was always out on the field early and one of the last to leave. This hard-to-miss work ethic is a reason Flacco has a shot to beat out Kyle Boller and Troy Smith, whether it's starting the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals or taking over the job at midseason.

With aging superstars, Baltimore's time is running out. The excellence of this man has been rumored for weeks. If he can make it happen, good for him and good for an awesome defense.

Hey Big Ben was doin it by week 2 his rookie year...if you can protect him go for it

June 22, 2008  09:37 AM ET

I hope he develops like Big Ben did. I like Big Ben's toughness and perseverance a lot, he would be a good role model for Flacco.

hope they start him against cincy. will be nice to welcome him to the nfl in the middle of a grudge afc north game that will be fugly

June 22, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Why not? It is not like he has a top tier QB in front of him. They drafted him so high because they know Boller is not the answer..

Player who shows up and on time, and puts in extra work on his own? Players Union better not hear of this!

Ravens... put them down as the NFL's worst team this year. Some of you may protest, but think of the Bears last year. Good personnel on D, offense that stunk. Similar scenario.

Cincinnati is a great game to start. He doesn't have to worry about a defense bearing down on him.

June 22, 2008  12:04 PM ET

I hope Troy Smith wins the job. He plays tough. Flacco is going to be a bust. Why Ozzie took him in the first round I have no idea

June 22, 2008  01:04 PM ET

lol so who ya goin start den....
ya shoulda had went for garcia who can mange dey game
n now should have been draftin more offense..no qbs

June 22, 2008  01:32 PM ET

haters... go Troy Smith

June 22, 2008  01:41 PM ET

Because they know they have zero playoff shot so why not get the guy some much needed experience for the future, even if that means just handing it off to McGahee 70% of the time.

Might as well start him. They have garbage on the depth chart anyways! I loved Troy Smith in college, but lets face it, he can't do it on the pro level. I won't even comment about Boller!!! Give Flacco a chance. He can't do any worse than all of Baltimores qb's over the years!

June 22, 2008  02:31 PM ET

They won't start him until they're SURE they have their O-line in place now that Ogden's gone.

funny that a team that won thirteen games two years ago and last year got cheated out of a win against the patriots suddenly has no shot at making the playoffs

Flacco probably will get plenty of snaps throughout the season. He may not start but when this team falls out of the playoff race he will get plenty of garbage time.
