Nuggets reject Pistons offer for Melo

The Pistons are in ongoing trade discussions with the Nuggets, with two All-Stars as the potential centerpieces, a team source told the Free Press on Saturday. The Nuggets want to bring point guard Chauncey Billups back to his hometown, and the Pistons are looking to make good on their botched 2003 draft and bring high-scoring forward Carmelo Anthony to Detroit, the person confirmed. But while talks are ongoing, the Nuggets, at this point, are reluctant to include Anthony in any deal. The Pistons source said the sides are "not even close" to an agreement. It's unclear what it might take to pry away Anthony.

pistons should be trading r.wallace (EXP) for r.jefferson,
then package a deal including t.prince for a decent bigman

(something like prince to the lakers, odom(EXP) to the nuggets and camby to the pistons - only 1 small filler needed to make the deal work salary wise and maybe a draft pick)

this works: Trade - talent and contract price/lengh equal up

PISTONS 2008-9 lineup (if they want to beat the celtics)

m.camby
a.mcdyss
r.jefferson
r.hamilton
c.billups
(bench :stuckey, maxiell etc)

im leaning toward r.jefferson as a better option (his trade value is quite low at the moment) in a trade than melo the guy seems to sook a bit to much and the whole defense thing

DONT forget the pistons are stale they need a SPARK on offense and prince is really good for what he does on both ends of the floor but he aint no scoring machine though

June 22, 2008  11:03 AM ET

pistons have an awesome backcourt and that is not the problem - that should not be touched that would just be plain stupid

(billups-hamilton-stuckey) break that up and the team will fall apart real quick for a variety of reasons

Pistons GM Dumars focuses a lot on character and desire to win in his players. He'll take a chance on a Rasheed Wallace who plays with lots of emotion, but I don't see him wanting Carmelo Anthony who stands around and focuses on his own scoring as opposed to defending or team play. I think the trade that makes sense for the Pistons and Nuggets is Rasheed Wallace for Marcus Camby basically straight up. The Pistons would then need to get more offense from the PF position which could be accomplished by trading some of their younger PFs such as Maxiell and Amir Johnson.

June 22, 2008  11:38 AM ET

they need a 20 points per game scorer (shooting and dunking) who dosent go missing thats why the pistons failed no energy on offense

June 22, 2008  11:39 AM ET

If I was Chauncey I might retire before going to the Nuggets.

Isn't Billups from Colorado?

June 22, 2008  11:54 AM ET

Denver wants too much for a player that hasnt proven himself as a certified all-star yet.

June 22, 2008  12:14 PM ET

Carmelo will end up staying in Denver because the Nuggets want too much in return, and the front office doesn't want to trade him. Karl does.

June 22, 2008  12:56 PM ET

Until Carmelo is thrown into the deal Billups ain't going anywhere.

June 22, 2008  01:18 PM ET

Billups and Prince for Melo would work for the Pistons because Detroit has the depth to make up for that (and a Melo/Wallace/McDyess frontcourt, whoa...). Denver is the capital of Colorado so you were right on your first try, DetroitFan (and obviously not a UM alum). Billups is also a Univ of Colorado man.

unless Denver is going to trade Iverson or JR Smith, doesn't really make sense to trade for billips. Iverson plays point and he's too small to play sg. would be a really small back court. without rip (and his ability to get aways with grabbing, blocking with chest bumps, etc.) i don't how good billips defense would be. and remember, once players leave Detroit (who is never penalized at home for all the grabbing they do...get the most favorable at home which lends credibility to cheating in NBA), such as ben wallace, who has been frustrated that he's now being called for fouls, the favorable calls stop, so when billips kicks his leg out to get to the free throw line (the stupidest foul call I've seen...at least Reggie Miller would fall to the floor when he used to do it...everyone knows that's not a foul when he kicks his leg out, he initiating the contact...more proof of corrupt NBA), he won't get those calls anyone once he's out of Detroit.

Why would Dumars consider trading Billups who is the engine that makes the Pistons run? He must REALLY have a lot of confidence in Stuckey then to take over the starting PG position. Personally I think Dumar's taking a huge gamble and leap of faith on that one. A proposed trade for the two wouldn't make any sense either from the Nuggets standpoint either. Despite 'Mello's off the court troubles who in their right mind would trade a 24yr. old All-Star for a 31yr. old (soon to be 32yr. in Sept.) All-Star in the downward cycle of his career? .
