Canadiens GM to visit Sundin

While the Maple Leafs began to prepare for life without Mats Sundin, the Canadiens sounded increasingly like they were preparing for life with him. Insiders say Habs general manager Bob Gainey will travel to Sweden this week, likely Wednesday, to have a one-on-one chat, having been granted the exclusive rights to speak with Sundin. "Anything is possible," said Gainey, who added he didn't talk to Sundin yesterday. "Mats may decide (his future) today, or Monday." Cliff Fletcher wasn't worried about going down in Maple Leafs history as the GM who let Sundin get away. "I just have to do my job," he said.

Mats not returning to the Leafs is the Best news I've heard all weekend next to the Schenn draft.
Gainey is welcome to the EGG. He will probably play this year IMO. However he is certainly not worth 7 million a year any more and last year he put up numbers that will be hard to duplicate. Can't wait to see what the Leafs will do with that extra 7 million they saved by skipping breakfast.

Inexplicable. That's all.

Sundin will have to take a pay cut. Probably 5 mil max. Tanguay just took up another 5 mil on the cap. I don't mind Sundin coming to MTL, as long as we still have the money to sign our UFAs. Streit and Plekanec are gonna want raises, and you can't blame them.

why not the leafs are a circus and he's a clown.perfect.

CANADAAAAAAA ON STWIKE!!!!!

anyone see that southpark?

June 22, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Adding Mats to the mix of young players in Montreal would be awesome for those Habbies.

June 22, 2008  12:26 PM ET

Shonuff...Get a clue. Sundin refused 7 million from the Leafs...you think the Habs can sign him for less if he decides to play?

June 22, 2008  12:42 PM ET

He refused 7 million FROM THE LEAFS. Maybe he'll take a pay cut to play for a chance to win, makes sense to me. I'm saying the Habs should ONLY take Mats for 5 or less, if he wants 7 he can go play anywhere else I don't care.

June 22, 2008  12:50 PM ET

Sundin not in a Leafs jersey next year...I can't see that happen, he has been the face of the Leafs forever. I was hoping he would retire with them! Good fit in Montreal. At this point, looks like it is going to be either the Pens or the Habs being the best in the east again. Especially since the Habs got Tanguay this week.

June 22, 2008  01:02 PM ET

Dmitch...truthfully the Habs fluked last year to get first place. No-way they will repeat as conference champs. Lets remember that they were elimintated from the playoffs a year earlier by the LEAFS and then they traded away Huet last season. They will be going into the season with a shell shocked leftover Price from the playoffs who was completely exposed. They have no experience in goal and Kovalev does not have the heart to put up the numbers he did last year. Koivu will get injured again...and if they don't get Sundin...well...good luck to them in their centennial year.

Baun-ded I see where your coming from, but I am still not sure. I could see them making another run as long as the scenerios you stated do not happen.

June 22, 2008  01:25 PM ET

D-Mitch...The other factor is that there is going to be an immeasurable amount of pressure in Montreal this year. They will not be taking any teams by surprise and Carbo will undergo enormous pressure when they falter in the slightest. This Team will get more attention this year then even that brought by Leafs nation...being that it is their 100th anniversary and expectations are high...too high IMO.

That's quite enough of that boston.

Did he really turn down 7 million from the Leafs? That's harsh

June 22, 2008  01:56 PM ET

Yeah...he did by not giving them an answer Otherone...1 yr at 7 million and a no movement clause...He didn't want it so the Leafs gave the Habs a crack at him...Getting Sundin out of Toronto is a good thing on several levels expecially now with the whole re-build under way.

The point is this indecisive chick should have made up his mind sooner. If he was such a standup guy.
