Duke: Nobody's worse than us

Duke took an inventive approach and avoided paying $450,000 after declining to play three scheduled football games with Louisville. The Blue Devils' legal defense: We're horrible. Really. Here's an excerpt from the Louisville Courier-Journal: The contract called for a penalty of $150,000 per game if a date with a "team of similar stature" could not be arranged. Duke's lawyers argued the Blue Devils, which have a record of 6-45 over the past five seasons, were so bad that any team would be a suitable replacement. Judge Shepherd agreed in his summary: "At oral argument, Duke (with a candor perhaps more attributable to good legal strategy than to institutional modesty) persuasively asserted that this is a threshold that could not be any lower. Duke's argument on this point cannot be reasonably disputed by Louisville."

well at least they admit it. still, it's no wonder why their football team sucks if they openly admit it......

Suck it up Duke. Navy and Army play teams every year loaded with Division I scholarship talent, you don't see them crying. Basketball teams schedule patsies at the beginning of the season every year to pad their won loss record. Probably Duke does too. Just shut up and play the schedule. Here is an idea. Hey, you could make yourself better. If that is a problem, then drop down to IAA football..

how is it that a team so dominant in B-ball can be so horrible at football?

June 22, 2008  03:42 PM ET

The way Louisville played last season Duke may have been able to beat them eventually. Especially now that they got one of my favorite coaches Cutcliffe down there.

June 22, 2008  06:04 PM ET

Maybe what Louisville means by similar stature is a team equally bad so that they can be assured of a "W." If that's the case, Duke's argument is self-defeating (pun intended)--there are no teams of "similar stature."

IF Duke puts NC A&T on thier schedule, maybe they can win...

June 22, 2008  08:12 PM ET

Syracuse lost their Intrasquad game, they should be considered.

June 22, 2008  08:17 PM ET

as an SU student...7 wins over the last 3 years...COMBINED...we'd lose to high school teams

June 22, 2008  08:42 PM ET

I wonder what their recruitment pitch is? "C'mon kid, you may suck, but we're Duke. You'll fit right it."

June 22, 2008  10:16 PM ET

NYMFAN31 ..AS a long time follower of SU football I agree. It is sad. He is a good coach, I just do not get it. Recruiting I guess, and the improvement of teams like Rutgers taking a lot of that Jersey talent. I am afraid the previous coach drove the program into the ground. Hard to dig it back up..

Well, now that they have admitted this on the record, I urge anyone and everyone who has attended one of their games in the last 10 years to sue for the cost of a ticket. They have now admitted that they field an inferior product, and so owe a complete refund, with interest, to all consumers.

Not that any of this is anything more than a drop in their endowment bucket, but the embarrassment of being so bad you are legally required to play for free is richly deserved.

June 23, 2008  08:21 AM ET

This is hilarious. DOOOOOOOK!!!!

June 23, 2008  10:43 AM ET

Pathetic. Couldn't they have saved money by paying one kid to throw a white flag on the field of these games? Or just not showed up?

June 23, 2008  10:55 AM ET

Duke has different admission standards for football and basketball players. That's not my opinion, that comes from every high school coach I have talked to in North Carolina. Standards for BB are lower than for football.

And one reason Duke basketball is less dominant in the tourney the last few years is they schedule fewer tough teams and more patsies in the regular season.

June 23, 2008  11:00 AM ET

Forgot. Duke's other problem in football is that their facilities are pitiful by D1 standards. Even in state, Carolina, NC State, ECU and Wake have way better facilities from the playing field to the weight room. Heck, Appalachian has better facilities than Duke.

Last year, a group of Duke alumni and former Duke fotball players had a meeting and asked the university to either put the money to bring the facilities up to par or get rid of football. When former players will publicly say either build decent facilities or get rid of the program, you know it's bad.

S if you're horrible, what's an other expected loss and who why worry who gives it to you? Louisville kinda imploded last season, but with that said I would rather be road kill to a good team than lose to someone as lousy or worse than I. At least there is a built in excuse for losing to a good team, nobody expected you to win anyway! Lose to a inferior squad and , well just see Michigan/Appy St. Michigam is still getting heavy flack from that debacle.

Forgive the spelling in my last post, I'm suffering from a "Big House flashback dementia" attack just remembering that goat screw in Ann-Arbor.

June 23, 2008  12:32 PM ET

WOW! A judge actually said that!

Calm down everyone. Duke has a bright future. You might wonder how I know this. I've been playing Dynesty mode on NCAA 08 and in the 12th season (2020), Duke had 9 wins. 9 WINS! Change is comin!
