What's wrong with Helton?
Todd Helton's position in the lineup has become a hot topic. It's likely that he will be moved out of the cleanup spot based on what manager Clint Hurdle and Helton said last weekend. Helton is mired in a 9-for-49 slump and just completed a 3-for-19 homestand. Hurdle has never judged Helton on his power, but rather his ability to score and drive in runs. He's not doing either right now, so he could benefit from a switch. Moving him to second is a possibility, giving him even better pitches to hit with Matt Holliday behind him. As a temporary fix that reflects who's hot now, Hurdle could simply flip-flop Brad Hawpe and Helton, shifting Helton to sixth. It's not a permanent solution since Hawpe has yet to prove he can consistently hit left-handers.

if this guy didn't use steroids then no one did. And Hurdle never judged Helton on his power? The guy used to regularly hit 35-40 HRs.

i gotta agree this guy went from stud to dud in no time. and coincidentally it all seem to happen when mlb put the clamps on PED's. its a shame

Helton will need two asteriks (sp) when he's finished - one for playing in Coors and the other for the PEDs.

Helton is getting old, guys. Also, remember that Coors Field officials began putting baseballs in a humidor a couple years back. That was about the time that balls quit flying out of there at such a rapid rate.

helton's drop has nothing to do with a humidor or age. its all about the PEDs - this is just another guy that was able to put up huge numbers and stay under the radar b/c no one really cares about Rockies baseball.

Helton is living proof that PED's do enhance performance...remarkable the time curve his decline followed.

that's a pretty good list but none would be complete without Raffy. Hell, I'd move him in front of McGwire. At least Mac hit 49 Hrs as a string bean rookie. Palmeiro amassed huge stats while flying under the radar. Show me one guy that benefitted more from playing in a hitter friendly park (TX), diluted pitching, and roids.

He usd to be a very good hitter who was near the top of the league every year. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that it might not be steroids but rather his age has finally caught up with him.

Check the stats. There's been fewer homers hit the last few years since the humidor was moved in. Still more are hit at Coors than most other fields, but it has decreased by a large percentage.
