Pistons eye Hawks forward

Keep an eye on the negotiations between the Hawks and forward Josh Smith. Smith is a restricted free agent reportedly seeking a deal that starts in excess of $11 million. Hawks new general manager Rick Sund might not be willing to start a deal at that price. If an impasse occurs, you can bet the Pistons will come asking about a possible sign-and-trade deal.

would love to see him with my Spurs.....wishful thinking I know. but one can hope the GM has a Memphis moment to help us out.

If anyone read my comments from the past 2-3 weeks, I predicted this sign and trade and is a very logical thing to do; Hawks don't want to spend, Josh doesn't want to stay ESPECIALLY after the foolish move to re-sign woodson.

Hawks may end up big losers since they may not be able to ANY offers that Josh gets. Clearly he's one of the top all around athletes out there (except for his mental lapses). Sign and trade for something, would be a christmas gift. Soo much for drafting talent, they have no clue how to hold on to what they created.

This guy aint that good; he is a product of having good players around him..................Joe Johnson and Al Horford

June 23, 2008  08:52 AM ET

No way he gets out of Atlanta...... he's a hometown boy and doesn't want to play for the boring Detriot Pistons. Don't get jealous now, the Hawks are here to stay!

"This guy aint that good; he is a product of having good players around him..................Joe Johnson and Al Horford"

Not sure if he is the real deal yet-
I'd like to see one more god season......BUT.......
Booth- the Pistons HAVE good players- so your point is irrelevant

June 23, 2008  08:57 AM ET

jgb; the piston players aint that good. As a matter of fact, they are lazy which is why they havent won another title and adding a guy like Josh Smith who has plenty of mental lapses will not help the pistons at all

BIGBOOTH, HOW ARE U GONNA SAY THAT THE PISTONS AINT THAT GOOD. LAST TIME I CHECKED THEIR THE ONLY TEAM TO GET AS FAR AS THEY HAVE 6 TIMES SINCE THE 80'S. WHERE IS UR TEAM, AND DON'T TRY TO LIE AND SAY THE CELTICS.

WE HAD THE 2ND BEST RECORD IN THE LEAGUE, AND WE'RE GOING TO BE 1 OR 2 NEXT YEAR AND U CAN BELIEVE THAT

June 23, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Josh Smith is the real deal! He is a do it all type player...not an MVP type player, but not many are. He would def. make a decent team into a very good team. He would also put fans in the seat.

June 23, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Well, as far as, my favorite team; I dont have one but what good is having the best record or second best record WHEN YOU DONT BRING HOME THE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The pistons are a team that turns it on and off and got comfortable. I admit during the regular season; they play good team ball but it is a different story during the postseason.

The pistons have had the same line-up for several years and have produced nothing since 04. They have had mental breakdowns because they get the "fat-cat" syndrome losing to teams that arent not as talented as they are.

if you want to cheer about having a good record with no championships; then go ahead. I dont agree with that philosophy.

You think this guy has insecurity issues? What small thing could he be trying to compensate for by typing in all caps? Hmmm.

June 23, 2008  10:00 AM ET

I really hope the Hawks manage to keep him, even though he doesn't get along with Woodson and they probably don't have the money to keep him. That nucleus of Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, and Al Horford SEEMS pretty promising and if Marvin Williams ever figures it out ( Chris Paul looks reaaaaalll nice now, huh Atlanta? ) they will be formidable...at least in the east.

June 23, 2008  10:04 AM ET

try being the heat, and then ask yourself if you cheer about the good record!,only 1 team wins it all evey year, pistons are a great team, they just lack good shooters. rebounds saved them for years, maybe they just get tired in the playoffs? because their age. only way you can explain why they do so good during the season, and run out of gas in the playoffs.
BUT IT'S BEEN GREAT WATCHING THE PISTONS!! EVEN IF THEY DON'T MAKE IT ALL THE WAY. AT LEAST THERE IS HOPE EVERY YEAR THAT THEY MAY GO ALL THE WAY. UN LIKE OTHER TEAMS.

How do blind people know when they are done wiping?

June 23, 2008  10:28 AM ET

It doesn't matter if he wants 11 million +, he's a restricted free agent and there's no way that any of the teams with money is going to offer that much to him. He's not worth it anyways; he's one of those players where if he's the second best guy on your team you really like your chances, but will never make it as a head-honcho type guy (examples: Tony Parker, Rashard Lewis, Pau Gasol).

June 23, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Rumors out that Philly may offer him 11 million... The Atlanta Spirit better not screw this one up... They already rehired Woody back... In my opinion that was strike 1... If Josh Smith doesn't get resigned, skip strike 2 and right to 3...

He doesn't need to be that so called star...look what Pau did for the Lakers and look what Tony has done for the Spurs. Not every player can be the star of a team, but he will surely help a team greatly. He is just so versatile.

June 23, 2008  10:56 AM ET

I am a life long Hawks fan, and if they do not resign Josh, Sund should be driven out of town. Whoever said he wants to leave Atlanta is crazy. He does not want to leave. He is from here and loves playing here.

June 23, 2008  11:03 AM ET

josh smith is not a product of the players around him....if i remember correctly al horford wasn't in the leauge last year and he did just fine without him

June 23, 2008  11:04 AM ET

Josh Smith is a talented player with plenty up side! If he developes the outside shot he persists in taking all too frequently he will be a force! His shot blocking, rebounding, and crowd pleasing aerial acts would make it a difficult decision to trade him if the Hawks had good management team. The key word being "IF" which they proved they aren't by resigning Woodson! The Hawks always find a way to screw up a good thing by trading away the talent they amass to improve other teams rosters! The list of former Hawk players on other contending teams is too long to list here!
