Front-runners for free-agent Sims

The Ravens are probably behind the San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams in signing free-agent offensive tackle Barry Sims. Unlike the 49ers and Rams, the Ravens are more set on their offensive line, which could push them farther down Sims' list. A former nine-year starter at left tackle for the Oakland Raiders, Sims recently worked out for the Ravens. The Ravens are preparing to go into training camp with Jared Gaither as their left tackle.

June 23, 2008  08:27 AM ET

I thought the old Lions RB was coming back.

June 23, 2008  08:34 AM ET

Heck, I read this and thought Chris Sims. How the heck is Barry Sims?

June 23, 2008  08:47 AM ET

hooah, they got me too, thought it was chris as well..

June 23, 2008  09:40 AM ET

I had to google.

He was subsequently drafted in the 17th round of the NFL European League draft by the Scottish Claymores and played there in the spring of 1999.

The Oakland Raiders picked Sims up as a free agent during training camp in 1999; his first start was in game 5 of the 1999 season. Sims has, as of 2007, played in 110 NFL games with 96 starts, seven playoff starts, two Conference Championships and one Super Bowl.

For the 2007 season, Sims replaced Robert Gallery as the starter at left tackle.

On February 29, 2008 Sims was released by the Raiders, and he currently remains a free agent.

Ia a RAIDERS fan and I intially thought the same thing; really, SF, Ravens, Rams, couold all use Chirs Simms as well.

I disagree. The Ravens are loaded at QB. They just don't have the play calling they need anymore.

June 23, 2008  10:39 AM ET

The Rams don't need Chris Simms....... but Barry could help boost the line a little bit, so I hope he ends up in STL

Do you really need me to answer this?

Someone wants Barry Sims???? I know who Barry Sims is. He's a big tub o'lard who isn't even good enough to cut it and the Raiders O-line, thats who he is. He has no concept of "pass-blocking" therefore - if your team is interested in him, might want to make sure you have plenty of backup QB's who can step in after Tubby lets your starter get destroyed.

June 23, 2008  11:55 AM ET

Comment #5 was taken from a google of Barry Sims but hey, they didn't say he was a tub of lard. Guess that's why nobody bothered to read it.

June 23, 2008  12:25 PM ET

they couldn't even find a photo of him.they had to put scott linehan in instead.
