Marbury: Isiah wanted to buy me out

Had Isiah Thomas stayed in power, Stephon Marbury said he knows his contract would have been bought out after the season. In an interview with The Post yesterday, Marbury said his contract was nearly bought out in November amidst the Nov. 13 Phoenix fiasco, when Marbury left the Knicks reportedly because he wasn't going to start anymore. According to Marbury, Thomas did not just want him out of the starting lineup for Mardy Collins in November, Thomas wanted him out of the organization and sent him home to have his contract bought out. Marbury said he still doesn't know how things changed the next day, when summoned back to Phoenix, the talk of a buyout history. "Going AWOL is something I never would do," Marbury told The Post. "I would never just get up and walk out on the team and say, 'I don't want to play because I'm not going to start.'"

This situation looks simple on the surface but I think it is much more complex than we realize. We don't know the words said between the two. I con't like Marbury much from all that I have heard but I have to cut him at least a LITTLE slack when I take into consideration that he was under Isiah Thomas who in my opinion is one of the worst coaches to ever coach in the NBA. Yeah I'm sure people can pull out some real bad ones but let's face it, Isiah is horrible.

"This situation looks simple on the surface but I think it is much more complex than we realize"

no-- it isn't ....
Marbury is a cancer.....and like any form of cancer he needs to be purged.
Unfotunately his conract was MASSIVE & they couldn't do it before this summer............now with 1 year left- it isn't as awful to be terminated

This guys talent doesn't even come close to his downside... for him to say he would never walk out on his team, is rediculous, thats all he has done his whole career... remember the T-Wolves? Its enver been anything but $$$ signs to this guy

June 23, 2008  09:39 AM ET

This wld have been 1 of Isiah's smarter decisions

June 23, 2008  10:03 AM ET

Trying to get rid of Marbury was probably the one thing Isiah tried to do that made sense.

June 23, 2008  10:06 AM ET

It would be funny if the Knicks still buy him out. Italy is still waiting for you, Marbs.

"Marbury is a cancer.....and like any form of cancer he needs to be purged"

without a doubt. his best days have long passed also. so take your cheap shoe line and dud of a talk show somewhere else

Marbury should've swallowed his foolish pride and stuck it out in Minnesota. He would've got to play with one of the best power forwards ever to play the game ( KG ) and built a reputation as a solid, if not outstanding player who can co exist with another outstanding player. Ya right. He would've never been able to handle that.

On second thought, the Wolves should've never traded Ray Allen on draft night for Stephon Marbury. Young Ray Allen and young KG on Minnesota? Sounds okay to me =)

Who knows what the real story is? I don't think a word that Isaih or Starbury says at this point is credible.

How do blind people know when they are done wiping?

June 23, 2008  10:48 AM ET

Starbury, you are EXACTLY the type of player who would go AWOL if told that you wouldn't start. Good luck finding a team (contender at that) who wants you after the final year of your ludicrous contract.

June 23, 2008  10:49 AM ET

And by the way, KG now has a ring to go with the money. Something you might get when you do play in Italy.

June 23, 2008  11:10 AM ET

I've said more than once, that Isiah never made an intelligent decision as a Knick executive. This would have given him one. Too bad he changed his mind.

i saw it on the howard stern show once. he asked this blind chick how did she know when she was done wiping herself after using #2 because most folks look at the tp to see how much work is left to do after the 1st wipe. obvisouly blind folks cant look at the tp.

Carlin Died....
soI'm assuming it is his tribute to him

When will Stephon learn, that it's best to just shut up in front of the media?

Anyway, the Knicks will either attempt to buy him out or just let him ride the year out with the team. No point in dealing that contract and picking up more long term salaries.

June 23, 2008  12:32 PM ET

Stephon is way past his prime they should trade his contract for a decent player.
