Kearse's return takes detour

Jevon Kearse's feel-good homecoming story was interrupted early Sunday when the Titans defensive end was charged with driving under the influence. At the moment Kearse's Cadillac Escalade was pulled over by Vanderbilt police at 4:42 a.m., everything changed for him, at least for the time being. Conversations about his return to the Titans were instead replaced by talk of the first black mark off the field for the 10-year pro. He was widely popular with fans from his first go-around with the organization from 1999 to 2003, helping lead the team to its only Super Bowl appearance. A police mug shot of Kearse, 31, was surely the last thing the Titans or their fans wanted to see one month before the start of training camp. According to a warrant obtained by The Tennessean, Kearse was observed swerving while traveling on West End Avenue around 23rd Avenue South. Vanderbilt police officer James Hicks said Kearse also appeared to be driving well over 40 mph in a 30 mph zone. When the officer turned on his blue lights, Kearse pulled into a parking lot at West End and 29th Avenue South. "Immediately I noticed he had red watery eyes, slurred speech, and an obvious odor of alcohol coming from his breath," Hicks wrote in the report. Kearse failed a field sobriety test, according to police, and refused to take a Breathalyzer test. He told the arresting officer he had one vodka Red Bull around 11-11:30 p.m. Saturday. He was also charged with a violation of the state's implied consent law for refusing to take a Breathalyzer test.

What a lightweight, one drink and 5 hours later he is still drunk.

Let's see, it's 4:42am, and you should be at home, but instead want to drive around Tennessee after having one Red Bull w/ vodka at 11:30pm the previous night. Well, unless that one Red Bull was given to you in a gallon jug, you should be fine to take that breathalyzer, right? I don't get it! You have enough money to buy what I'm sure it a nice Cadillac Escalade, but you can't come up with the money to have one of your posse to do the driving? Or, hey, try it the way most common folk do, call a freak'n cab! It would be like 50 bucks Mr. Millionaire. You deserve this "Freak"!

June 23, 2008  08:23 AM ET

Damn right BoBo. Not completely relevent, but I am dumbfounded on why Spears still drives when obviously its not a good idea. If I could I would pay someone 50k a year to cart my **** around from bar to bar.

Must be great for everyone to sit up on their high horse and condemn the guy for being busted for something everyone of you has probably done at one time or another and you just weren't caught. This isn't a player with repeated offenses who obviously didnt learn his lesson.. and there was no accident or injuries. (Thank God). No violence, no guns, no raining on a buncb of strippers.
Sounds to me that maybe sleep deprivation may have been a contributor as well. He was probably going on no sleep for the last 22 hours or so.

June 23, 2008  08:39 AM ET

It is especially easy to get up on my high horse KP when the guy I am condemning makes millions of dollars and shouldn't be out at 4:42AM driving while intoxicated. Like BoBo said hire a cab or have someone drive you home. Don't risk your career and your life to your drunk driving.

This is the first black mark for an off the field incident for a 10-year pro. My God, people, cut him some slack.

Once again, an NFL player is in trouble with the law. And once again, guess which team he does not play for.

June 23, 2008  08:48 AM ET

Don't you just love Monday mornings?

June 23, 2008  09:11 AM ET

Sucks CowboyDave...suckssuckssucks. I just left work and next thing I know I am driving back in. The missing weekend days have nothing to do with inebriating elixir but rather some irregular time and space contiuum.

June 23, 2008  09:18 AM ET

Jackman,
It's the blackhole theory all over again.

June 23, 2008  09:22 AM ET

Huh? I will have to spend the rest of the morning researching that via google Lady........thanks for the heads up. To top it off, days now begin to get shorter.

June 23, 2008  09:24 AM ET

such a tight wad to not call a cab. It'll be funny if Lord Roger docks him a few games and pay. that would be one expensive drink.

June 23, 2008  09:24 AM ET

And here I thought the day couldn't get any more depressing with the death of George Carlin. The days are getting shorter. Oy whatyacallyour Vey.

June 23, 2008  09:25 AM ET

RIP George - We'll miss you.

June 23, 2008  09:26 AM ET

June 23, 2008  09:46 AM ET

I'll bet Red Bull is loving the free press. Red Bull gives you wings.......and dwi's

June 23, 2008  09:49 AM ET

The police should have charged him with stealing all those millions from the Eagles as well.

June 23, 2008  09:53 AM ET

BigBlue.. heres the thing though. If I get busted for DUI and lose MY license, its a whole lot harder on ME than it would be on him -
And dont tell me you have never ever driven a car while impaired. You just didnt get caught.
Its one thing to condemn Ray Lewis or Adam Jones.. Im betting there arent too many of us that are involved in that crap. But a simple DUI ? we dont even KNOW what his blood alcohol was. You can have 2 beers in one hour and be at a .08 which is above the legal limit. Tell me, do YOU get drunk on 2 beers? No. You don't. But guess what? Its still a DUI.
My point is the guy has never been in trouble before. And noone was hurt, He loses his license for 30 days. Now if he gets busted AGAIN, I say have at it.
