Bruins already talking to Hossa?
Posted: Monday June 23, 2008 07:29AM ET
Could the Bruins already be talking contract with superstar winger Marian Hossa? Asked that question last night, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli offered little in the way of candor. "Very good question," he responded in a terse e-mail. "But can't comment. Cheers." It's highly possible that talks between Boston and Hossa have begun, because it has become a trend for clubs to be granted permission to speak with pending unrestricted free agents well ahead of the July 1 start of the NHL's open marketplace.

Anyone else tired of players who give the old "I want to stay for less" and then turn around and do this if, in fact, it's true?

Report Offensive CommentTR .... some and some I think, if you read yesterday's thread - I'm with you though. Given bostongm's comment yesterday it will be interesting to see how the Bruin's are going to pay for Hossa - if, as you say, this is all true.

Report Offensive CommentHossa in Boston! Are you kidding me? With Bergeron and Kobesew back and healthy and with all the kids that helped Boston get to where they got last season, it could be a very good year for the last team popularity wise in Titletown, MA. Not saying they will win it all. But they could make some noise.

Report Offensive CommentI am sure happy to read yet another "maybe" story. Irealise that this is called 'Truth and Rumours" , but could get a bit more of the former, and a little less of the latter?
Maybe they can call it "Truth and Unsubstantiated Rumours"?

Report Offensive CommentGawd...Now we are going to have to put up with the insufferable BGM's shuffling of his line combinations and glee when he finally rises to welcome the dawn...which to BGM means the sun is well over the yardarm.

The Truth Spiny...should arrive in about 10 days or so. It's going to get real interesting. Wouldn't it be ironic to see Hossa sign as a Leaf just when they ship out Sundin?
They won't of course...it is funny to imagine though.
The Bruins need more scoring and Hossa would surely give them that...but lets not forget the Hawks also have a keen interest in him. However, the Hawks don't have his buddy Chara to hold his hand. Are the Pens also out of this?
Time will tell when the Truth arrives.

Report Offensive CommentHossa thinks he's worth more than he is. Boston will overpay him and the rest of the East will laugh.
He was never going to be more than just a "rental" for the Pens. Not a bad deal though, they almost won the Cup.

Report Offensive CommentTR, the discount Hossa takes would be if he goes to the Bruins. He wouldn't be staying for less, he'd be staying for more, more than anyone else can pay him. Boston can't afford to match Pitt's offer (come to think of it Pitt can't afford that offer either), but the play here is that he'd take less money to play in Boston. If the B's take the Murray hit then they can go 7 million max. Big if, but the Pens have already mentioned 8 million. Pretty much guaranteeing nobody can beat it (and that Malkin's gone after next year).

Report Offensive CommentWho knows. Maybe Hossa is dangling the proverbial carrot before the donkey as more leverage. Tsk, tsk.....

Report Offensive Commentmovingtarget....good points. We typed in at the same same time so the above was not referring to your post. I liked your comments and....ya got me, buddy. I really don't know what's going on.
If they commit big $$ for Malkin and then trade him next year, as you think they might, then why not just trade him now and possibly sign Malone and Hossa? Or are they hoping for the automatic draft picks if he's an UFA? Or, are they really going to trade Malkin? He's only 21 and a bright future, Or, hell, I don't know...... --:-)
Question: do you think that the free agency deadline should be placed BEFORE or AFTER the NHL draft? With so many FAs unsigned and so many in limbo (he'll get signed if they don't sign so-and-so or, maybe, such-and-such), it might help teams at the draft to make trades if they actually knew who they had.
I mean, the Pens drafted TWO goaltenders! Am I missing something?

Report Offensive CommentDangling the carrot can be bad, because if you want 8mil a year, but you have 7 on an offer, and the best offer you get after that is 5mil and the Pens find out then they can go "why should we give you that much when no one else wanted to?"
Shero also said that he needed to know from Hossa what was going on so he would know how much he can spend on the rest. Malkin will get his contract offer right after July 1st, Orpik will get an extension. Bugsy thinks he's worth 5 mil a year when he's worth 3.5 tops. Fluery is in arbitration, so no matter what he will end up in a Pens jersey for a few more years (5mil). Laraque is gone because the Pens don't need him. After that my friends and I aren't sure what will go on.
