Joe Pa hurting Penn St. recruiting?

Joe Paterno is adamant that Penn State's football recruiting is not being hindered by his uncertain future. But Tom Lemming, a well-respected national recruiting expert for CBS College Sports, strongly disagrees with the 81-year-old Hall of Fame coach. "It's obvious Penn State is being hurt, but nobody there is going to admit it," Lemming said. "They've got verbal commitments from some good players already for 2009, but they're not doing as well as they did 15 or 20 years ago. They're not dominating Pennsylvania anymore. They've only got one of the top five kids [offensive lineman Eric Shrive] in the state so far [for 2009], whereas before they would always get four of the top five. On top of that, Penn State's not even winning Western Pennsylvania these days. [Pitt coach] Dave Wannstedt has dominated that area the last three years." Another telltale sign that Penn State has lost its stranglehold in Western Pennsylvania is the fact that Ohio State has landed eight players from the WPIAL since 2004. That list includes Jeannette High School quarterback Terrelle Pryor, the country's top-rated player this past season, and Gateway linebacker Dorian Bell, considered the WPIAL's best prospect this fall.

We lose too many PA recruits, that's for sure. We offset the losses by getting all of the good guys out of Maryland. It won't work forever.

Can you say DEMENTIA!!!

Joe Pa - please stay. The longer you stay, the better for Tressel and the Buckeyes. We love it here in Ohio...stay as long as you want!

June 23, 2008  09:11 AM ET

The same thing happened at Alabama during Bear's last years there (and his retirement date was set by the state pension plan, so it was pretty definite), and more recently at Florida State; hopefully, the "heir apparent" setup there will solve that issue.

The only way this will go away for Penn State is if, like FSU, a "crown prince" assistant is named to succeed JoPa. Until it does, this will be used by every other program trying to nab a Penn State potential recruit.

PSU plays in Ohio Stadium this year and I heard they have a port-a-potty all set for JoePa so he won't have to run to the locker room when it's time to change his Depends...

June 23, 2008  09:42 AM ET

This is a secret? Hell, it came out last year that he hadn't made ONE recruiting trip in years! ****? I love Joe to death, but he needs to seriously look at what's going on. They can't get any top recruits because they question how good the team is gonna be. They are all going to OSU and Michigan. PSU is so inconsistent that I would be hesitant if I were a hot player, too.

I swear, wasn't the EXACT SAME Thread on here like two weeks ago?

June 23, 2008  10:03 AM ET

C'mon! What stud high school football star dosen't want to play for a guy with one leg in a wheelchair and the other dangling over gravesite?

June 23, 2008  10:07 AM ET

People want to rave about Paterno and it should be his decision to hang it up,etc. He is being selfish. Penn State is going down and it's not like the Big 10 (11) is getting better. Thank you JoePa for your contributions to college football, you're a legend, now please go home and let someone take over this program and turn it back into a powerhouse.

June 23, 2008  10:09 AM ET

i can't stand reading these weekly updates on joe pa and penn state. i think it's time for him to step down, or at least get a sucession plan together (aka have greg schiano pack his bags), and i had gripes about psu recruiting last year, but their 2009 recruiting seemed to be going moderately well. leave joe alone!

June 23, 2008  10:11 AM ET

Are we talking about the same Tom Lemming who rated Larry Johnson as a two star recruit? The same man who has a history of bias against Penn State because of the lack of access Joe gives him and the other so-called experts to the program? Get over it Tom, you are a joking as is every recruiting service out there.

June 23, 2008  10:17 AM ET

The problem is not with Joe's coaching or the recruiting (if you read the article) , but with the uncertainty of the situation at PSU. Paterno even says to the kids he visits that he doesn't know if he'll be their coach. What kid wants uncertainty like that? If there wasn't this controversy about his coaching, if PSU would bust a move here, things would go from good to even better. As it is, PSU has done a pretty damn good job: 9-4 the last two seasons, bowl wins in a tough, tough conference. In fact, PSU seems to "cleaning up" in Maryland recruiting. They get good enough players, but the uncertainty thing is probably keeping them from being as good a team as they could be.

This article, written by a PITT guy, kind of stinks, written as it is by an a hole writer who seems to be in love with Wannie. (Wannstedt ain't Mr. Charisma and you wonder what he's empowered to do things at Pitt that Paterno can't or won't do. Paterno is a pretty high minded individual. BTW, other teams lost out on Pryor, too, and you just wonder what OSU offered. I am tired of having the Pryor loss to OSU hung on Paterno.)

PSU should make Joe "coach emeritus," let him be on the sidelines for life and a contributor. Jeez, the guy's a legend. How quickly we forget, eh?

June 23, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Bravo, George W. Watson. Well put. The uncertainty is what is killing PSU. That is, until Greg Schiano comes to Happy Valley.

June 23, 2008  10:29 AM ET

I think at some point he is in danger of tarnishing his reputation, no one wants to be known as the dinner guest who wouldn't leave!

June 23, 2008  10:46 AM ET

PSU will have a good team this year. All of the criminals are out of jail and back on the field. This will help recruiting.
