General manager Paul Holmgren said the Flyers are very close to finalizing a multiyear deal with Jeff Carter, are also close with Riley Cote, and are confident they can get randy Jones on paper before free agency opens July 1. Steve Eminger, acquired along with a third-round pick (which was used to draft goalie Jacob DeSerres) from the Capitals for the 27th pick overall, is also going to be without a contract July 1, but Holmgren said it will not be a difficult negotiation.

Was there ever any doubt?

June 23, 2008  09:44 AM ET

Well...at 5.5 million they better hope that Gagne can compete at his previous pre-concussion level...
Moving Umberger IMO was a tough move. He was a true Flyer and great two way player.
Now that he is gone though...Carter should be no problem for them to sign. No-way can they afford not to.

June 23, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Out of the three free agents everyone knew that Umberger was the "odd" man out....They didn't really have a true position for him....They have a #1 & #2 centerman....They have #1 & #2 wingers....he would've been on the third line and the money "rumored" to have been asked for would have been too much for a third liner....

What else does Homer have up his sleeve this offseason?

June 23, 2008  11:33 AM ET

Was surprised to see that they traded R.J. Umberger to Columbus at the draft. Was it a salary issue?

June 23, 2008  11:34 AM ET

Whoops...sorry PhillyMike....you already answered that. I typed before I read.

June 23, 2008  12:14 PM ET

So keep a player just because he had a soild playoff run ..........?
Umberger's still a free agent on July 1, which means Homer can still offer him a contract ...
And as for Carter, he's only going to get better & he's def a solid player ....

June 23, 2008  12:19 PM ET

If Umberger had signed an offer sheet with another team, and Flyers chose not to match it, would Flyers have gotten more picks in return than what Columbus gave them, which was a #1, and #3 ?? (Flyers also included a #4 with RJ)
I believe the number of picks would be based on the salary he would sign for, but does anyone know the answer to this?

June 23, 2008  12:21 PM ET

I really dont think we would get any good picks for him .. How can you beat a 1st & a 3rd ....?

June 23, 2008  01:30 PM ET

philly you traded your best playoff performer so you can overpay an underacheiving Jeff Carter? As a PENS fan I love it! Keep overpaying players like carter and briere and see where that gets you.

June 23, 2008  01:39 PM ET

KMF, that was the most retarded thing ive ever heard!
Carter an underacheiver ....? Trust me, Carter is going to get better & better each year, he's still only 23.

First of all, Briere was our best playoff player, he had the most playoff points of the team. Second, we need a player thats going to be good ALL season long, not just in the playoffs. Umberger was an OK player during the regular season, he picked it up during the playoffs!

I love how Pens fans come in here & act like they know ****!

June 23, 2008  01:43 PM ET

Oh Flyers, crawl back in your last place hole.

June 23, 2008  01:46 PM ET

And because of the Umberger trade, we were able to trade our other 1st round draft pick and get another young defenseman, which we are in desperate need of!

June 23, 2008  01:46 PM ET

Last place ...?
I guess that makes sense .....

June 23, 2008  02:11 PM ET

Briere was absolutely invisible when it mattered most in the PGH series! Last time I checked you want players to step up in the playoffs when theres pressure and thats what umberger does. Carter is a good player but going to be an overpaid one just like DANIELLE briere

June 23, 2008  02:23 PM ET

WOW!!! Pens fans are still bitter over losing the Cup to the Wings on home ice. So much for that home winning streak you had going. Not sure why the trashing of the Flyers and Carter/Briere, but it seems like the Pens are the team that will be losing a big playoff performer soon as well, so since you didn't win anything this year either, let's all look forward to next season and pick it and go from there.

June 23, 2008  02:29 PM ET

c'mon, practically the whole team was invisible against the pens, not just db. richards had a decent series, carter played hard without much production and umby was inconsistent. the flyers wouldn't have been in the conf. finals without danny. or jeff for that matter.

June 23, 2008  02:49 PM ET

Utley....I think KMF was happy about Umberger leaving because RJ consistently torched the Pens when you played us.

June 23, 2008  02:54 PM ET

All I said was you traded your best playoff performer to overpay for carter. Now does that make sense? you are already overpaying for briere. why not keep umberger who actually shows up for big games at a lesser price?

June 23, 2008  03:28 PM ET

Carter is going to be good...he's only 23 and just coming into his prime. If you don't know what the contract amount is yet how can you say he's being overpaid? Umberger is a loss for Philly but I think he's easier to cover than losing Carter.

June 23, 2008  03:56 PM ET

First of all, Briere was our best playoff player, he had the most playoff points of the team.
UtleyMVP08

He sure looked like dung on a stick when I was watching him. He failed miserably in Buffalo the previous year and I more or less thought he failed miserably in Philly as well this year. In fact his failure in Buffalo was all I needed to see to know I'd never throw big $$ at him.
