Red Wings face tough decisions

The Red Wings have a number of tough decisions to make before the start of free agency on July 1. With the NHL draft completed, general manager Ken Holland is turning his attention to getting deals completed with a number of players, and he plans to have organizational meetings this week. The Wings, who recently won their fourth Stanley Cup title in 11 years, still have questions about their goaltending, defense and forwards. Holland said he recently spoke to the agents for Andreas Lilja and Brad Stuart and plans to meet this week with Chris Chelios.

Make Stuart a priority...cheli is about finished..should hang em up. Lilja ..?? .. trade him for a bag of pucks and a gallon of gatorade.

Stuart has never lived up to his potential, but he seemed to fit in well in Detroit's system. If he can take a pay cut then the Wings would be wise to sign him. Cheli is a freak of nature, he'll either be back in Detroit or he'll retire, I can't see him on another team.

The only question that really matters in Detroit is: Do the Wings want to repeat? We know they will be competitive. They always are but, to repeat, they'll have to get creative.

June 23, 2008  09:36 AM ET

A rolling stone gathers no moss.
I'm confident the Wings will answer all the questions and fill in the blanks before the puck drops on the 08-09 season.
Of course they will challenge for another Cup...but winning it is another matter. Anything can happen in the playoffs and nothing is guaranteed. They will have to address the goal tending issue though...Dominic seem to be toast.

June 23, 2008  09:42 AM ET

I'm not sure the Wings will make Brad Stuart a priority. Thre's a bunch of UFA D-men who could replace him and Lilja also.

Although I doubt it, hey might decide to get into the Brian Campbell sweepstakes ..... if they have the cap room. He won't come cheap, though!

June 23, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Baun Dom is retired.

June 23, 2008  10:07 AM ET

Yes Peter...that would mean toast...for the moment...unless of course he changes his mind again...

June 23, 2008  10:30 AM ET

The Wings like Stuart...they'll keep him if his price isn't too high that is

As for the goalie issue...they're going to bring Howard up from G Rapids I'm pretty sure...give him a shot as backup

As to Campbell...I think they'd love to get him...but the price is going to be pretty steep like D Cruiser said...they have the cap space..but that signing alone would just about kill it.

June 23, 2008  10:51 AM ET

Lilja and Stuart are replaceable. I believe they will bring back Chelly as a player/assistant coach. He is an inspirational leader in that room, and he will probably accept the fact that he will play about 60 games, and help with the development of some of their youngsters. He will be a great coach some day, and Holland will use him to help the club with his great wealth of experience and knowledge. Can't have too many Chelly's around.

June 23, 2008  11:37 AM ET

Hey if they want to bring in Cheli as a coach ...do it now.. he can take Todd McLellan's spot right this minute!! I agree he'd be a great coach. And don't gimme that "no respect as a coach cuz he was in the locker room as a player with these guys" line of bs..
We're not talking Head Coach....just an assistant...so that line won't apply
Also that free's up some cap room....hmmmmmmm Campbell lookinnnnnng good to me

June 23, 2008  12:00 PM ET

Yup......Chelios needs to retire. Not one game played in the Finals. That should be his cue. I thought Stuart looked good in the top 4 with these guys. But i wonder what he's asking for? He has always been a mercenary. Is it possible that he likes his current situation? Perhaps. Maybe if the Wings can offer him close to his market value,he'll stay. As for Howard. Is he ready for the next big step?

The toughest decision the Wings are going to face this year is: How we gonna beat Dallas? Go Stars

June 23, 2008  01:42 PM ET

don't worry, no matter what Detroit will be one of the NHL's top teams---they always are.

June 23, 2008  01:44 PM ET

A number of tough decisions? Really?? Most everyone is signed, they are under the cap, Osgood just had the best year and playoffs of his career, The Mule just started getting hot (how sick will this offense be with him healthy?), and they were the best defense in the league. It will be up to Chelios if he retires, no tough choice there--if he retires that frees up money, but we'd love to have him since he's smart and he's aware of what type of role he would have in the rotation. D-men is where the questions lie, and that's why management is making a priority of Stuart and Lilja.

The tough choice will be towards the future. Will they think that Howard will be fit for the future, since Ozzie's getting older? How long can Lidstrom remain "ageless"? But as for next year, it looks pretty scary for the rest of the league.

How?

Answer.... easily

June 23, 2008  03:16 PM ET

now for comments to posters who have a clue

BGM is right...I think it's time Cheli hung em up
As much as I like his ironman type play...I think his body is finally giving out after years of punishment

Lilja? let him go..I don't know what they see in this guy and I been watching the Wings forever

June 23, 2008  04:06 PM ET

I agree with mhwings, I don't get why Liljia is favored either. The only time I have seen him look solid is when the Wings put together a Swedish 5 line of Z, Franzen, Samuelsson, Lidstrom and Liljia. Who wouldn't look solid with that line?

If Chelios is willing to accept playing 30-40 games at a reduced price, then bring him back as the 7th or 8th defenseman. I like what I saw from Ericsson last year, and having him as the 5th or 6th D and bringing him along slowly would be great. Stuart fit in well with Kronwall, so of all the D that are in question, I would make him the priority.

And as far as beating Dallas goes, until Dallas learns that you can't win if you don't score more than the other team, they can't beat the Wings.

June 23, 2008  04:30 PM ET

The only tough decisions I see are on the D.... Quincey has been a great player as well.. and how about Meech.... Ericsson needs to realize that his size can crush guys...hahaha...that's like 10 D guys and 8 slots

June 23, 2008  05:58 PM ET

Not much I can say that hasn't been said already. Stuart will be the priority, Lijla will be let go, and Cheli should stay on as an assistant. Hope that will happen. Howard is really for the next step in net, and Osgood will be there, too. No worries by Wings fans.
