Met owner Fred Wilpon said yesterday that Willie Randolph simply hadn't won enough games over the last year-plus to continue leading the club. Randolph was fired a week ago and Wilpon, speaking to reporters yesterday at an MLB event, indicated the former manager was well aware of what the winning standard was going to be when he was hired. "It's all a matter of performance, and Willie knew this when he started," Wilpon said. Wilpon also defended Omar Minaya, saying the GM, "has done a great job," and said the Mets' minor-league system - portrayed in the press as barren -is "in much better shape than is being reported." Wilpon credited Randolph for his success during three-plus years, but added it was not enough. "I think Willie did a good job," Wilpon said. "I think that the results the last, say, 14 months were not up to what we thought it had to be." Wilpon also explained how he found out that GM Omar Minaya planned to fire Randolph, saying Minaya requested a meeting with ownership after the June 15 doubleheader at Shea against the Rangers.

You have to win. Period. You lose, you suck. Plain and simple. No racism, no hatred. The dude just could not get the players to play together loike the team they are suppose to be. You lose, you lose your job. Get over it.

Say your job is making widgets. You don't make enough widgets, you lose your job. Or your a salesman. YOu don't make enough sales, you lose your job.

Same thing...

yes, and Minaya is doing such a good job that they hired 'special assistant' Wayne Krivsky......the Wilpons are starting to sound like politicians.

June 24, 2008  10:32 AM ET

He was getting too close to .500 and had to be fired quick before it would have been impossible to say this.

T-E-A-M......................

June 24, 2008  11:04 AM ET

Does anything interesting happen in socialist societies?

June 24, 2008  01:38 PM ET

Yes. It's a laugh riot when large foreign corporations get nationalized.

June 24, 2008  01:52 PM ET

Not for the capitalist stockholders who built the companies.

June 24, 2008  02:05 PM ET

I can understand firing someone who under performs. But, in this case it was as much the players performance if not more than Willie's. If the Mets don't change some of the other pieces, they will never put this puzzle together.

Capitalistic stockholders=average americans

Agreed, but it's fun to watch. Those French and Italians have such a comedic sixth sense.

June 24, 2008  02:58 PM ET

Funny I don't remember seeing him take his at bats, or catching a fly ball, or tht's right he isn't playing. The GM put this team together, why didn't he get fired????????????????

June 24, 2008  03:10 PM ET

Because he threw Willie under the Bus, which saved him temporarily.

June 24, 2008  03:32 PM ET

Judging by the Chicken's absence, he did not take kindly to your rebuttals.

June 24, 2008  03:51 PM ET

If the Mets don't make the playoffs, Omar should be gone at the end of the season too.
Firing Willie was the right move but now it's on the team to win.

June 24, 2008  04:52 PM ET

Excuse me? WILLIE didn't win enough? Uh, I didn't see him out there playing nine positions. He had a bunch of over-rated divas who think that Baseball has to bow down to them every time they take the field. Same goes for those other pinstriped divas in New York.
Willie had nothing to do with what the Messtropolitans are doing. He could only watch his players muck things up.

June 24, 2008  05:37 PM ET

They still have a good looking team on paper, but yes i agree, it wasn't Willie's fault, unfortunately managers are hired to be fired.

Anytime it take s an owner this long to explain what happened, then you know anything they say is nothing but cover ...for them.
