Pitfalls for next Notre Dame AD

How much authority does a Notre Dame athletic director wield? How maddening are Notre Dame's various idiosyncrasies? Is the outsized pressure any different? "You have an alumni base that covers the whole country -- the world, for that matter," said LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri, the Irish coach from 1995-2006. "You have a very strong-willed board of trustees. It's a Catholic university, so you have that influence. You have a very high level of academic standards. Then you're dealing with the student-athletes and coaches who want to have a chance to be successful on the field. "I can imagine every day the different groups that [an athletic director] has to try to satisfy could be an overwhelming task. There's just no way to make everyone happy." On the one hand, the new athletic director will reap the benefits of various infrastructure improvements. The school's 2007 annual report pegged the 2006-07 athletic budget at $44.5 million, according to a university spokesman. Not exorbitant, not penurious. Regardless, in the area that drives the budget -- football -- no Notre Dame athletic director needs a crowbar to pry open wallets. Ultimately, though, money may be less a concern than authority within the chain of command. "The most important thing is to find out how that's going to work," said Gene Corrigan, Notre Dame's athletic director from 1981-87. "That's the first thing you ask: Who do I report to? How does this work?"

Simple: If the football team wins then the job is a piece of cake. If the football team loses then the job is a nightmare (until you get fired in 2 months). Either way, the AD will be a rich man...so cry me a river!

This is a joke, the Chicago Tribune has nothing better to do. I thought Chicago was a Big city????

They're looking more like the Det. Free Press everyday.

not to mention that you always have to be on guard for the football coach mistking the new AD for a rather large TWINKIE

Such a tough job with the meager resources and profile that Notre Dame has.... cry me a **** river!!! You really have to try hard to suck as bad as they did last year. Nice job fatty!

They'll need him as coach after the "Charley-is-hungry" era. Direct pipeline to TD Jesus.

I can see there being some pitfalls.

1) You have a 30 year 150 billion dollar contract tied to SlightlyLessFat Tuna
2) In spite of that, you will have to win more than 3 games
3)And win with talent that is a little step above what you would find at Northwestern

Wake up THOS EHCOES ****!

Boy you guys can't come up with anything new.... It's the same old same old.

As for Hammered, well all I can say is you need some help!

The rest of the ND haters, try & think of some new jokes. Oh, & don't worry about the QB that wants to jump on board with VT, he's only making a better choice.

P.L.A.C.T.!! GO IRISH!
