Mav tries to clean up bad rep

Josh Howard's words -- the foolish ones he uttered on the radio before Game 3 of the playoff series against New Orleans about smoking marijuana during the off-season -- have tainted his reputation. But he refuses to run from his words. Or let them prevent him from being an asset to the communities in Dallas and his native North Carolina. Actually, he'll spend some more time dealing with the fallout from his words during the four-day basketball camp, which began Monday, that bears his name. You can't fool kids. They know what he said about smoking marijuana, whether they listened to it on the radio, read it or heard from their friends. "People's first reaction is that I just got high all day every day," Howard said Monday afternoon. "I got on a radio station back home and talked about it. I've got nothing to hide. I ain't scared. There's been no backlash." That's not really the point. Howard, who said he'll address his comments, also needs to explain to each of the camp's 137 kids why they should refrain from using marijuana, any other illegal drug, and avoid underage drinking.

there is nothing wrong with marijuana by itself it is great for pain relief and has been used for as long as anyone can remember

i just hope he aint mixing it with tobacco now that would be just plain stupid

bet with all those offseason munchies he puts on 40 lbs. Wonder if the police department's ears have perked up on Howard. bet he gets busted for pot this off season.

June 24, 2008  07:47 AM ET

Vaughn9 - If Josh Howard were in San Antonio or Utah or some place like that, then sure, he would probably get busted, because the cops have nothing better to do.
However, he's in Dallas, which is a big city, and the cops probably have better things to do than get a warrant and go through the trouble of invading his privacy just to book him for smoking weed.
It's interesting that he is the one who has to deliver an anti-drug message to kids though. He should say: "Do as I say, not as I do". In other words, he's not living up to the words that he preaches, but he should preach them anyway.

just another athlete that doesn't know how to keep his mouth shut. who cares what you do in the off season? but since you felt the need to brag to the nation that you are recreational pot smoker you've created nothing but unwanted attention for yourself, your employer, and on top of that got you giving insincere advice to kids on pot use.

June 24, 2008  08:35 AM ET

Jho ruined himself by going to the radio and being honest about himself. He is a true nice guy who does not lie and just telling what he feels but he made a big mistake. He has long ways to make it up. It starts right now and he has to gain the Dalla trust first by working really hard and continue to reach the community. He is a real down to earth person.

June 24, 2008  09:01 AM ET

You can't change stupid.......

June 24, 2008  09:24 AM ET

"Listen kids, I smoke weed regularly. In fact, I smoked me a joint on da way to da camp, and I'm gonna smoke me some more soon as I get outta here. I love smokin' weed, but y'all should stay away from weed and other illegal drugs."

Yet another stupid, thuggish, dopehead athlete trying to convince kids to do as he says, not as he does.

June 24, 2008  09:27 AM ET

Where does t&r get the photos they use? They seem to always come up with photos that make athletes look dumb, ugly, thuggish, wierd, etc. Sometimes the photos seem to fit perfectly with the story - Howard's photo accompanying this story is a perfect example.

just curious??? what's thuggish about smoking pot or the pic used in the article??

June 24, 2008  09:53 AM ET

If I was making millions and millions a year from a job:

1) I'd always have an advisor on my right side to make sure I didn't say or do anything in public to jeapordize me making millions. They would monitor everything that came out of my mouth so I could keep making those millions until I retired.
2) And I'd have another advisor on the left side to make sure no one saw me lighting up!

I commend Howard for his candor. I think more people should be open about their recreational use. Even to kids, I guarantee that he can give a better drug use lesson than (to take the opposite approach to Dapper Dave's racially charged statements) some bible thumping- whitey whose never even touched the stuff.

Howard smoking will NOT influence anyone else's decision to do the same unless he brings a pound the the camp and insists everyone join in. The best thing he can do is inform the kids of his decision. Why he chooses to smoke, the benefits and the consequences. That is a real education, using fear to educate anyone is dumb. Educate and let everyone make informed decisions for themselves.

Unless its perscribed by a doctor its ILLEGAL and no one should encourage others, especially kids, to do things that are illegal .

If he fells that strongly about it he should be campaigning to legalize it.

This is the start of anarchy, who's got a handbasket?

June 24, 2008  10:57 AM ET

The Governator said it best,
"marijuana is not a drug, it is a plant."

Just legalize it.. and tax it..

Know of any doctors?..

heheh, jk.

June 24, 2008  11:02 AM ET

There is no question about the "medicinal benefits" of marijuana. The problem is it's ILLEGAL. So if you use it to deal with pain, or as a tranquilizer, it should be a private matter. Only an idiot would go on the radio and admit to using it. Especially someone making $10 million a year while the drug is on your employer's banned substance list. To do something that stupid is a good indication he was high at the time.

not a bright comment, not thought out at all. grant it , it is illegal, but have u seen an alcoholic with the d.ts scrambling to get that first drink it is not a pretty sight at all.

An alcoholic with the DTs is broke. He can go legally and buy a bottle.

Yeah, there's nothing thuggish/criminal/stupid about driving around smoking weed. ...perfectly "non-thuggish" behavior.

I never said the picture looked "thuggish". He looks dazed in the picture - as if he's been smoking weed. His left hand is positioned in such a way that it looks like a joint or cigarette should be in it.

You have to admit that's not a picture you would send out as your Chistmas card photo. Then again, since you seem to think smoking weed is a "normal" activity maybe you would send such a picture out at Christmas time.

I first learned about Marijuana back in 1969 when I went to The Woodstock concert !!! I also learned about hippies and free love unfortunately for me I didn't become a hippie and didnt get to experience the pot or free love !!! "What a bummer man" !!!

take it easy dapper. i wanted to know why you thought smoking pot was thuggish? and from your other response you come off has the pic posted by t&r was thuggish in some sort of manner....based on what?? you can try to smooth it over as 'it looks like he's dazed or whatever' i dont' think most who read your post took it as that....at least i didn't.....i could be wrong.
thuggish is a complete exaggeration as to what happened with this guy. you should look up what thug means because to use it so loosely is irresponsible even for such a law abiding citizen as yourself.
and to be quite honest pot smoking is a lot more 'normal'(whatever that means to you) than you are probably willing to except.
the guy opened his big mouth when he shouldn't have let's leave it at that. don't try to spin this into some crazy pot smoker = degenerate 'thug' that is some kind of piece of trash driving aroung smoking weed(don't alter the facts as we know them) you are way off and out of line for categorizing him as a thug.
