Michigan QB commit wavering?

Kevin Newsome, Michigan's dual-threat QB commit who could be the offensive centerpiece Rich Rodriguez has been waiting for, has decided to transfer. Transfer high schools, that is. Newsome will transfer from Western Branch High School and play his senior year at Hargrave Military Academy. But Michigan fans breathing a sigh of relief shouldn't feel 100% safe yet, according to Newsome's former high school coach. Former Western Branch coach Lew Johnston, a close family friend to the Newsome, said Rivals.com's fourth-ranked dual-threat QB of the 2009 class might not be as firm in his commitment to the Wolverines as some may think. Virginia Tech appears to be one of the schools giving Newsome the most attention. The Hokies have enjoyed success with dual-threat QBs Michael and Marcus Vick. They were also Newsome's favorite team growing up.

uh oh! The sky is falling!

I personally am not worried because anything can happen until a kid signs his LOI and Michigan isn't just going to let him walk away without a fight. But one thing is for sure, Kevin and his family surely didn't have a lot of confidence in Lew's ability develop Kevin as a "passing" Qb and thus why Kevin is going to Hargrave to further develop his passing game.

forgot to add the old coach isn't quite being truthful as Newsome was told at the get go that UM would be recruiting more than one QB and he was made clear of it. This is all about an old ex coach who is pissed that he wasn't able to steer a kid to VT.

Well if they can draw paralels betwen him and the Vick brothers, I'd prefer he stays far far away from Ann Arbor.

June 24, 2008  08:43 AM ET

keep it in state kevin. don't fall into the all the UofM hype.

June 24, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Well it's all speculation until he signs on the dotted line. If he goes elsewhere, he goes elsewhere.

June 24, 2008  09:19 AM ET

Yet another example why no fan of any program should take ever take verbal commitments with any seriousness.

June 24, 2008  09:39 AM ET

High School kids blow like the wind.... it's amazing to me that any of them at all actually keep a commitment. Following rivals.com is the equivalent of trying to keep up with who the HS QB's current girlfriend is.....

Maybe, just maybe we have an other "Pryor situation" in the making? Stay tuned, this should get interesting.

1) This kid has not been hyped to the point where its impossible to meet expectations.

2) No offense, but VA Tech is no OSU. Pryor was a recruiting battle between Michigan's new coach (whose offense relied on a QB like him) and Ohio State, their arch rival...

This is exactly th e kind of kid that would help Rich get where he wants to go and his loss to VT would be a setback.

June 24, 2008  10:41 AM ET

High school kids commit and de-commit like seasons, which is why the ncaa should let them sign a LOI whenever they want, not have to wait until signing day. This would help with at least some of the commitments, and it wouldnt hurt anybody either.

Even if he leaves U of M, they still have another 4-star QB in Shavodrick Beaver, but i would prefer Newsome, so I hope he stays.

"Shavodrick Beaver" would be so much easier to make fun of...

you guys do know that Lew Johnston was not Newsome's coach last year? he retired after the 2006 season.

typical bait and switch headline by FN...

It looks like old Rich-Rod may be in over his head. Lot's of negative comments floating around about him and his new Michigan program, the kid may have picked up on them. You don't come in to a storied, successful program like Michigan from West Virginia (for God's sake) and act like you are going to show them how to play football. BTW, hasn't a few of his past WVU players been in the news lately (Pacman Jone, Chris Henry)?

Yes, keep that trash where it it if that's the case

June 24, 2008  12:20 PM ET

Hokies have also enjoyed success with the Caca and underage girls

June 24, 2008  12:41 PM ET

The funny thing is, that I dont think ids commit to schools anymore because they really want to go to that school, I think they commit for the publicity, then to see if someone else might come in a make an offer from a better program.

I personally dont think it gets much better than being offered from a historical power like Michigan, but things change...

"The Hokies have enjoyed success with dual-threat QBs Michael and Marcus Vick"

I guess there are different ways of measuring success!
