The Tampa Bay Lightning have called a media conference for Tuesday where the team will announce Barry Melrose as its new head coach. New team owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie will be on hand to make the announcement, which has been expected for the past several weeks. Melrose, who has been working with ESPN since 1996 as an analyst, coached the Los Angeles Kings for 2 1/2 seasons (1992-95). Under his guidance, the Kings posted a record of 79-101-29.

The question is, does he even remember how to walk, JFKJR?

This has disaster written all over it.

No kidding... he'll be fired after the season is over.

Hey at least the team picture will be perdy.

You know, he probably understands how some of the best systems work in today's NHL as well as anybody. That shouldn't be a concern. What the Lightning should be concerned about is whether or not the players will buy in. It will be very difficult for the new ownership group to pass this off as anything other than a publicity stunt. I just hope for their sake that the players listen to what he says, because there is no doubt in my mind that he knows what he's talking about as well as anybody.

I wonder about this. Melrose does have some positive credentials as a coach, even though He's never really won anything. And he does come off as a pretty knowledgeable guy, although compare to some of the guys on American tv (Clement, Milbury, McGuire) a lampost might sound fairly intelligent I think he'll do fine, as long as he isn't expected to deliver a Cup in his first season.

Billy Ray Cyrus will sing the anthem at every game, and he'll get Brian Engblom to coach defencemen

i can see the signs in tampa now.... "shut up barry and get a haircut".... this is just a bad idea.... i dont think vinnie or marty would enjoy having another know it all big mouth behind the bench.... just my opinion

It's official... the mullet will be getting a suntan. I don't think Don Cherry is doing anything this upcoming year so why doesn't some NHL team hire him?

Hey we had him in our minor league system years ago and he did an ok job. the wings had to pass on bringing him up in order to hire scotty. I guess he felt jilted and went out west. We have some experience with TV personalities here in Detroit ,Matt Millen, And what a wonderful experience this is. I think he has won 12 games in 7 years. So you go fla. get yourself that man. Might be nice to see him eat some crow for all the comments he has made over the years.

I think he has the knowledge to perform as well as any other coach. Being in the TV studio means he has watched a LOT of film on the various teams and styles. That could be a huge advantage if they get the players to buy in and if the players have any talent what-so-ever.
