Army joining Red Bull team?

Sirius Speedway has learned that Red Bull Racing is actually a leading candidate for the Army deal. Red Bull General Manager Jay Frye first brought the Army sponsorship to NASCAR during his tenure at MB2 Motorsports, and is said to be in serious discussions to secure that sponsorship once again in 2009. There is no word on whether the Army would replace Red Bull as sponsor of either Brian Vickers or AJ Allmendinger next season, or if a third car will be added to the team for former Formula One and current Craftsman Truck Series star Scott Speed.

I agree totally.....in WWII we should have used VW's instead of Jeeps? I am apalled. We will hear all day about where cars are made. Fact is Toyota is a Japanese company and we are losing American car manurfacturing jobs daily.

June 24, 2008  08:37 AM ET

It just ain't right, period. I'l stop buying Army products if they do. hehe

June 24, 2008  08:38 AM ET

U.S. Army sponsoring a Japanese car owned by an Austrian beverage company? Perhaps they can get Montoya, Franchitti, or Carpentier to drive it next year?

This makes about as much sense as the National Guard sponsoring an Italian chassis with a Japanese motor driven by a Brazilian in IndyCar.

June 24, 2008  08:45 AM ET

This makes as much sense as Pontiac building the G8 in Australia and Gm's Saturn division building the Astra in Antwerp Belgium. In fact if you look at an Astra by Saturn, the clock is military time as 1800 = 6 oclock. Most people in this country don't use that but it is common overseas. What is GM trying to tell us ?

June 24, 2008  08:48 AM ET

I don't see them sponsoring any cars outside the country from F-1 to Baja. NASCAR is fundamentaly American and for our SERVICES to sponsor a foreign manufacturer is repulsive. I do know that basically the car is just a shell and we are all rooting for stickers on that shell, but "it is the spirit of the thing". Fiat won't be running the Air Force as a sponsor on their way to Dakar, so Toyota needs to just back away from the Army.

June 24, 2008  08:51 AM ET

NASCAR is going to regret it if this happens, I hope those tards in the front office get to the Army people and do not let this happen

June 24, 2008  08:54 AM ET

jackmanrob & BRB I couldn't agree more with you guys
the Army needs to look American . Not Japanese ,, It just
don't send the right message as far as I'am concerened.
JK I get your your point also.

I agree that as far as NASCAR, they are pretty much all the same. The engines and components, of the RACE cars, are all built here. The badging issue, would/should bother some old vets that still have trouble accepting the WWII aspect. One way of overcoming the car though, would be to have the right driver. Carpentier, or Ambrose....I don't think so Tim....But like Mark MArtin was, another good old boy American, might be able to pull it off.

June 24, 2008  09:20 AM ET

Its just poor taste and a kick in the groin.

June 24, 2008  11:26 AM ET

Scott Speed and Dave Blaney are both American. The US Army being on a Toyota is pretty bad on the simple principle of it being a Japanese car, but I think even more problems would ensue should somebody like Villeneuve end up driving the car.

June 24, 2008  11:45 AM ET

Unfortunatelt Sith I don't think any of our Pro-America views are going to sway the powers that be. It comes down to cash and performance, and right now Toyota is performing. (Damn that hurt to say)

June 24, 2008  12:12 PM ET

No, KB is performing. Look at the top 12, it isn't all Toyota.

June 24, 2008  12:21 PM ET

So Reutimann, Hamlin, Vickers and Blaney don't count? Besides Hamlin, they are all having better seasons than last year. Even Almendinger is showing up.

June 24, 2008  12:25 PM ET

Better than last year, fine, but your pie hole just opened up and swallowed your foot on that one. I think Ford and Cousin Carl might have something to say about Toyata being the all, everything. Blah, blah, blah.

June 24, 2008  01:04 PM ET

The Wall Street Journal had an article about General Motors closing plants, they also said thet one of many plants overseas would be closed and the work would be done in a plant in the United States. Can you imagine, GM has plants building cars overseas, I thought they were an American automobile builder. HMMMM Oh Yes they were building cars to be shipped to the U.S.

I am not defending them or advocating them...just stating they are doing better and will draw the sponsor. Settle down Beavis....

June 24, 2008  01:18 PM ET

Did anyone in the Army PR office even THINK about this? Not a good move, if they make it.
