Phillies in market for pitcher

The Phillies are well into their annual midseason quest to land a starting pitcher. C.C. Sabathia, Greg Maddux, Roy Oswalt and Erik Bedard are some of the names being tossed around. Their farm system is thin in the kind of high-upside, almost-major-league-ready talent that other clubs desire when in a selling mode. So, the Phils may have to include a big-league player in a package for a pitcher. The outfield is the one area where the Phils have depth. It's also where they have a young, inexpensive, productive player that other teams have coveted for a couple of years: Shane Victorino.

Please Don't trade Shane, hes our only fast outfielder.

June 24, 2008  08:38 AM ET

wait...doesnt CC have to be a proven winner first? Fat boy hasnt done jack to be proud of this season other than beat the black widow in an eating contest.

If the Phillies dump Shane for a pitcher....it had better be someone better than, say, Freddy Garcia, Adam Eaton, Kevin Brown, and all the other garbage worthless pitchers they have traded for in the past, or signed as FA's.

Maddux in stinkin' Philly? Lord, no.

June 24, 2008  09:15 AM ET

I like shane but if they can pick up a top line 2 or 3 hole starter and sign em past this year, no question you make that move. Roy Oswald is an interesting name... He hasn't had the type of season so far he has usually had but maybe like Lidge a change of scenery would do him good.

I'd hate to lose the Fyin Hawiian. But they really do need another starter.

June 24, 2008  09:30 AM ET

Philly needs another pitcher, someone better than Myers. They could be a force if they can shut down the other team when needed. I just don't see the Phils able to pull off a trade for a big gun.

We need to get rid of Myers & Flash!

They are both terrible!

I don't agree with that. Myers is going through a funk lately but seems to be coming through it. He pitched a great game last time out, Phils bats just weren't producing. For the most part Flash has been productive. I wouldn't right these two off just yet.

June 24, 2008  10:19 AM ET

No, they do need to dump Myers. He's on a contract year and he's not earning what they're paying him. And certainly not earning what he's likely to be demanding.

June 24, 2008  10:32 AM ET

I don't know if I would say Victorino is worth it. The rest of the outfield is up there in age.

June 24, 2008  10:36 AM ET

Kevin Brown, and all the other garbage worthless pitchers they have traded for in the past, or signed as FA's.

We never had Kevn Brown....

Pardon my negative attitude, it comes from years of watching Ed Wade gm for the phillies.

But they will just screw this up somehow.

Good point, although he wouldn't be easy to move at the moment.

Maybe they should just wait until next year and sign a "new and improved" Curt Schilling !!

June 24, 2008  11:03 AM ET

Myers is not in a contract year. Victorino and a propect are not going to get you CC. Maybe Randy Wolf or something like that.
Every year the Phillies dream and can do zippo.

June 24, 2008  11:05 AM ET

For a team that likes to puff out its chest because they were handed a division title, there sure are a lot of holes on that team. Lets see...Cole Hamels and a bunch of nothing. Rollins come back down to earth this year, Utley suddenly can't hit and a human windmill at first base. Oh by the way, where are all the prospects to fill in at third base, right field, and the rotation?

June 24, 2008  11:06 AM ET

Victorino and what prospect will get CC??? Maybe CC Deville but not Sabathia.
