Jackets in free-agent market

Posted: Tuesday June 24, 2008 07:19AM ET

Shopping season has arrived. The Blue Jackets will take one Ryan Malone, please. General manager Scott Howson said he will add three or four players to the roster this summer. In hockey terms, summer gets under way with the start of the free-agent signing season July 1. It is not exactly a coincidence that July 1 is also a national holiday up here, known as Canada Day. Howson has at least $12 million to spend on unrestricted free agents (and more to tend to the Jackets' restricted free agents, such as Pascal Leclaire and R.J. Umberger). There also might be a trade or two somewhere deep in the summer, as teams try to lighten their salary-cap number and/or fortify one position or another.

Hey, Scotty! You're forgetting one minor detail! There are 29 other GMs who want to do the same thing!

Am I missing something, how is RJ Umberger a RFA with CBJ? Did philly trade his rights?

Report Offensive Comment

DurkDiggler,
they did it on Friday during the draft.

CBJ obtained:
Umberger and 4th round pick

Philly obtained:
1st round (19th overall) and 3rd round picks

Cool thanks, Harri, I didn't have access to a tv or internet all weekend so I missed all the draft stuff.

Oops, sorry for posting it twice :/

DurkDiggler,
Aside from the Umberger deal there were some other interesting transactions, the most imporant ones you'll find listed below:

1) O.Jokinen to Phoenix for Boynton, Ballard, 2nd round pick
2) Eminger and a 3rd round pick to Philly for 1st round pick
3) 3-way deal:
* to Calgary: Cammalleri, 2nd round pick
from Calgary: Tanguay, 5th round pick

* to Montreal: Tanguay, 5th round pick
from Montreal: 1st round pick at this year's and a 2nd round pick in next year's draft

* to LA: 1st round pick at this year's and a 2nd round pick in next year's draft
from LA: Cammalleri, 2nd round pick

Interesting but it won't bear fruit. What I saw out of the Habs in the playoffs was a lack of physical play and a fear of screening the net on powerplays.

Tanguay will rectify neither of those issues.

It'll bear a field of fruit don't worry about it. Teams play that hard in the playoffs, but its a wide-open game during the season. They didn't win the East by screening and playing physical, Carbo's system worked out just fine. Their youngsters didn't know what it took to win in the playoffs, now they have a better idea. And instead of Ryder playing with Koivu and Higgins it'll be Tanguay, which is a huge improvement.

I agree with Sho Nuff .... I think Tanguay will have an impact there. the Habs system better fits his type of play. I think this was a good aquisition for the Habs

what's up with gilbert brule folks?the games i saw him in he musta played 5mins tops.

Report Offensive Comment

chimbonda,

Brule hasn't really developed the way the blue jackets had hoped he would. He's played in over 60 games each of the last two years but never managed more than 20 pts or so. Some of that could be attributed to lack of ice-time but I think the jackets were hoping for more out of the #6 overall pick.

thanks maplepenguin.bet they hoping for more from brassard then!

I am not really from the burgh. I have a terminology problem. Please see the thread under college football called "Joe Paterno -- losing his edge" ... do guys from the burgh call themselves PITT guys now? Ithought that applied only to the University of Pittsburg people. I knew a Penn State guy or two from the area and they would punch you out for calling them a PITT guy. I thought I caught George Watson kinda warping a fact or two. That started it.

Columbus will over-pay to get Malone.

Columbus will over-pay to get Malone.

Agreed. But will they be the only team to do so...I think that's the big question regarding Malone. Also how much will they over pay given that he's probably worth maybe 3-4 mill tops.

Report Offensive Comment

Malone=Overrated (good and tough player who became great from who he played with)

Report Offensive Comment

Malone nixed the alleged trade (hence getting Umberger instead) the first time 'round. Why would he change his mind now? If Columbus needs a bunch of players can they afford to drop big $$ for Malone? And...is he their answer?
