Rangers interested in Sundin

Glen Sather is seriously considering a 2008-09 go-for-it-now first line tandem of Mats Sundin and Jaromir Jagr, sources in Europe and North America have told The Post. Sundin, the 37-year-old long-time Maple Leafs captain who can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, has made it clear New York is his desired destination. Indeed, we're told that the Rangers have held conversations with both the centerman and his representative, J.P. Barry, after having received permission to do so by Toronto. Barry is employed by CAA Sports, the same firm for which Jagr's agent, Pat Brisson, works. Jagr, who told The Post on Sunday, "There is no rush [on a contract]," has returned to Europe for the next week to 10 days. The numbers, however, aren't the Rangers' primary concern; Chris Drury is. For if Sundin signs and assumes the role of first-line center, the Rangers would have to move Drury out of the middle and onto the wing.

Them money-grabbin Rnagers gotsa buy their tem as always....bunch of over-the-hill farts way past their prime

Should we be surprised? The Rangers are always interested in buying anybody who's for sale! They have been trying to buy their way to the cup since Sather became the GM! He should not by now that that you can't win the Cup with a bunch of mercenaries. It doesn't work!

June 24, 2008  07:23 AM ET

That should read: "He should know by now ...." My bad!

June 24, 2008  08:05 AM ET

Eh, made it clear NY is his desired destination? Please state the source of that. For all I've heard, his number one priority is and always has been resigning with the Leafs. I doubt they're gonna give him a serious offer though.. they'll probably low-ball him with a $2 million offer and then act suprised and throw **** at him when he doesn't resign.

June 24, 2008  08:20 AM ET

Dashiva, you're right on one account. There is NO WAY New York is his 'desired destination'. This is just a classic example of ignorant American media twisting a situation to make a great story. The fact of the matter is that Mats doesn't HAVE a 'desired destination'. If he did, he would have already signed somewhere. Mats is very deliberate in his decision making, he never rushes into things; he never has and he never will.

I will, however, disagree with your stance that the Leafs will lowball him. There were (reliable) reports out of the Maple Leafs camp early last week that the Leafs offered Sundin a one-year, $7 million contract (including a no-trade clause). He hasn't accepted yet because, as I mentioned above, he hasn't even decided if he wants to continue his career; letalone where he wants to play.

So, to your second comment, I say that it's unfounded. In my humble opinion, I say that Mats has earned every ***damn right to sign with a team that has a legitimate Stanley Cup opportunity. This guys has been the heart and soul of a, for lack of a better term, embarassing franchise for almost a decade and a half. If he chooses to go elsewhere to FINALLY give himself a real shot at a prize that has eluded him for so long I, for one, say "good luck sir, it's been a pleasure".

Gee, another washed up star...maybe they should put Shannie (will probably sign), Jagr and Sundin together and call them the AARP line.

June 24, 2008  08:31 AM ET

Toronto has already offered Sundin 1 year at 7 mill with a no trade clause. Its time for everyone to leave the "Rangers try and buy the cup" at the door. Sather has to operate within the same boundaries as every other team .If hes better at it than most good for him.Matts on my Blueshirts.......wow..if this happens i'll prolly shoot one in my pants.

June 24, 2008  08:32 AM ET

And, yes, I kow it couldn't be the AARP line since no of them are American.

June 24, 2008  08:36 AM ET

Also have to agree with Dashiva....as much as id like to see this happen what exactly is the source for this? Averys hairdresser? Tie Domis tailor? Crappy reporting.

Guys, please bear in mind that this story is from a Rupert Murdoch owned paper, so anything printed in it must be judged in that light.
And since all teams have to play by the same rules, the days of trying to buy a Cup (which never works) are gone. Personally, as a Rangers' fan I think this would not be a terribly prudent move. The youth on the team was an important part of any of last season's sucesses, and the last thing they need to do is go back to the olde days of buying up every 35+ "name" player out there. I think Sather would be better served perhaps signing Avery and Roszival. And if they get a hankering for an older type player, I think there are a few already there.

Yeah, New York is his number one destination according to this crappy paper. New York shouldn't even be allowed to have newspapers. Look, if they want the guy that's fine, but I would hardly call a line with Mats Sundin and Jaromir Jagr "going for it all right now". Maybe ten years ago, but not today. How could you move Chris Drury to the wing? He may not be the top center in the NHL, but I would venture to say that the Rangers don't have anyone better, and Mats Sundin wouldn't be an upgrade over Drury.

You should be surprised that you comment teams trying to buy cups yet you refuse to realize there is a hard salary cap. Not for every team except the Rangers, for every team.

Slap yourselves.

This is a pretty funnt statement, since people were saying this about The Rangers long before Sather ever got there/

ish no think so!

How Elias gets more than Brodeur is beyond me.

June 24, 2008  11:52 AM ET

I thought I read that Montreal had exclusive right to speak with Sundin? Or is that a fallacy too?

Apropos of your comment yesterday, Spiny, maybe this should be renamed "Partial Truths, Unsubstantiated Rumors and Stuff We Dreamed Up In The Shower This Morning". Not catchy enough, maybe?

June 24, 2008  11:56 AM ET

I like Elias as a player, he needs sniping support and some playmaking help... but nobody on that team deserves more than brodeur...

devils need to get involved in the chase of some of these guys...jokinen, hossa, malone, etc.....if they are going to field the same team as last year, we are wasting our time...

That hasn't stoped the Rangers from trying! And, that's why they're cutting lose a bunch of prior "purchased" mercenaries that didn't deliever, to free up cap space so they can go through this futile exercise all over again! Like Phily did last year and like the Rangers have been doing for the last 10! It hasn't worked!

Winning teams build their nucleous, the winning core through the draft and shore up their teams through some trades and maybe a UFA or two, like Detroit and the Penguins did, for instance!

Now, slap yourself!

I'm a huge Rangers fan and do not want Sundin here. As for the nonsense about the Rangers "buying everything," well, that's just ridiculous in an era where there is a cap. BTW - those bankrupt penguins did a great job of spending loads of dough on junk immediately after the lockout. That didn't work too well, huh? it's just magnified with NY teams because people LOVE to hate this city.
