Suspended Melo wants loyalty

Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony will sit out the first two games of next season, a suspension levied by the team Monday for his arrest in April for suspicion of driving under the influence. Also Monday, Anthony spoke publicly for the first time since the season ended and requested that management assure him he won't be traded. "That's the only thing that I want," Anthony said in a telephone interview. "I felt like I've been committed to them and showed my loyalty to them and to the city and state. I would like the same thing in return. I would rather them be honest with me and just let me know." Nuggets management has said it won't talk publicly about trade rumors. Anthony's agent, Calvin Andrews, has said several times that the Nuggets have told him they have no intention of trading his client. "I'm getting assurances," Andrews said again Monday. NBA sources have said the Nuggets will listen to trade discussions about any player as they seek to improve their roster, but will not consider moving Anthony unless they are overwhelmed by an offer.

If anything is going to happen, it will happen on draft night.

I question his "loyalty" to the team. Wasn't he out partying just two nights before the playoffs began?
Even if the drunk-driving incident is forgiven as a simple mistake, he could have taken the playoffs more seriously, because his preparation was something that he could control.

The only things Carmelo seems to be committed to are smoking weed, drunk driving and collecting tattoos. He certainly doesn't seem to be committed to improving his leadership skills, defense and all-around game.

carmelo's really acting like a obsessed woman. wow, in the same footsteps as starbury. just in the media acting like crybabies. it's business. it may hurt his feeling that of the big 3 and i'll add Bosh though i think he's a tier below, he's the only one that keeps coming up in trade rumors and DWade and Lebrons teams are trying to make any move possible (like picking rose because Dwade wants him and getting Ben Wallace because Lebron wanted him) while he's being offered in trades. If he's so great, then he wouldn't worry about it. he would know that his team would never part with him except for another top tier player. stop begging for a commitment. make them beg. come with a newly, developed defensive ferocity and keep you offense up and make them beg.

just not to be seen like imus...there are obsessed men too...just using an old stereotype.

Maybe if you got more than a 1 year college education, you'd realize that the NBA is a BUSINESS.
Loyalty comes if you WIN....not exit 1st round of playoffs or not make playoffs......
if you spent more time at the gym working on your DEFENSE, instead of whatever it is you do ...........you'd be winning & not on the trading block

Pleeease like me...boohooo

June 24, 2008  09:19 AM ET

I dont think a player asking for a commitment from his team makes him a crybaby, your all way off with that. And jgb, regarless if he stayed at Cuse for all 4 years, he wouldn't of gotten an education, lets be honest...

I do however agree, it is a business and the Nugs dont have to commit to anything, but asking for it doesn't make him a baby, sucker punching someone and running away like he did against the God awful Knicks makes him a baby... Forget telling him to play defense, HE CANT, He wont get better because to be a good defender you have to be a bit of a tough guy, and wiling to put the work in, two things he will never be... Oh wait, Champion, thats 3 things he'll never be

I think Carmelo is used to getting what he wants (pampered and spoiled) and life changes when you have to grow up and get a job (even a high paying job).

Someone needs to pull him in the corner and remind him that this is just a job, a business owned by rich businessmen.

As soon as TV created megabucks for sports, loyalty disappeared (from all sides).

Carmelo's behaviour seems self-destructive. I wonder what his other problems are.

June 24, 2008  11:09 AM ET

Carmelo should be smart enough to see the writing on the wall. The Nuggets are looking to trade him. Otherwise they wouldn't have a problem just saying so. Whether it happens or not, depends on what they can get for him.

June 24, 2008  11:31 AM ET

I would trade him in a second for the right player or draft pick !!!

June 24, 2008  12:17 PM ET

Melo is a very talented player, but I think Denver is the wrong program for him. He and a few other nuggets players tend to be lazy and undisciplined ... and Karl seems to allow it night after night. The Nuggets roster is way more talented than their record shows. They need a new coach that can establish a more disciplined mentality and structured program. My point is that getting traded might be the best long-term career move for Melo. Meanwhile, why is no one talking about getting rid of George Karl in Denver? I don't think the players are the real problem.

June 24, 2008  12:28 PM ET

What he needs is a good swift kick in the A,s,s

June 24, 2008  12:42 PM ET

Or a kick to the bullocks.

June 24, 2008  01:02 PM ET

this is the most ignorant & obnoxious star in the leauge he demands respect & he thinks he knows everything your a great player Melo but lose the ego!

June 24, 2008  01:30 PM ET

Well, Melo, the Nuggets would like a basketball player that knows how to play defense, knows how to rebound, and tries to stay in shape. They'd also like to win a playoff series. It doesn't seem that you're too interested in doing any of that for them, so what the hell do you think they owe you?

June 24, 2008  01:56 PM ET

tries to act tough on court (back pedaling incident), does petty crimes (dui), doesn't stay fit, can't win with AI on the team, was the franchise player...you're blowing, kid! why should they give you loyalty? you're just afraid of starting over in a different city. grow the cojones that you should've had by college and take your s*it seriously.

June 24, 2008  02:24 PM ET

What a looser, how about not drinking a driving. Show some respect.

June 24, 2008  02:27 PM ET

Anthony is just another overhyped-by-a-shoe-company joke that can dunk real nice, but can be beaten off the dribble by an average 10 year old in a kid's rec league. Give him a 40 and tell him to shut his trap.
