Judge: Breathalyzer for Benson

A Travis County judge changed the bond conditions for former Longhorn and Chicago Bear running back Cedric Benson on Monday, ordering him to install an ignition interlock Breathalyzer on his car within the next three days. Benson and his lawyer appeared Monday morning at a pre-trial hearing on three misdemeanor charges before County Court-at-Law Judge Elisabeth Earle. Once the Breathlyzer is installed in Benson's car, he will have to blow into the device each time he tries to start the car. If his alcohol level exceeds the legal limit, the car will not start. Earle also asked Benson to take alcohol counseling courses as a condition of his bail. Benson will participate in the NFL's alcohol counseling program. Earle said she requested Benson be present at the pretrial hearing because she wanted him to "understand the severity of the charges." "You are the role model of too many young people out there," Earle told Benson. Benson currently faces three misdemeanor charges stemming from alcohol-related incidents within the past two months.

I wonder which one of Benson's posse is destined to be the 24/7/365 sober breathalyzer blower. Cedric is obviously not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but come on! This is way too easy for a guy who makes a habit out of doing the things the wrong way.

I'm confused why is this being put on a sports website? He isn't an NFL player now and he won't be again.

Yeah, he's done. But he has millions to console him. And for nothing.

Nice work today on Truth & Rumors, S.I. Now if you can do some reporting outside of the police blotters you'll find real role models in Jared DeVries, Aaron Kampman and friends.

My God! There actually is something more boring than soccer itself!

June 24, 2008  12:49 PM ET

Well this shouldn't impede Cedric much, he pretty much blows all the time anyway.

June 24, 2008  02:42 PM ET

Is he still smiling like he was in his last mug shot?

June 24, 2008  03:06 PM ET

Why would he participate in the NFL program when he's no longer in the NFL??????????????????

June 24, 2008  03:12 PM ET

some dumb NFL team, like the Raiders, will sign him.

Now you did it! You ruined the surprise at Al's press conference.

I can see it now. Raiders sign Benson. Benson goes on IR for back injury suffered while blowing into breathalyzer. Hey, maybe Benson can do for the breathalyzer what Onterrio Smith did for the whizzator?? I sense some serious endorsement money in Benson's future.
