Pitt lands Aliquippa recruit

The Pitt football program received a third verbal commitment for its 2009 recruiting class, when Aliquippa's Juantez Hollins, a defensive lineman who will be a senior for the Quips in the Fall, committed to Pitt. Hollins chose Pitt over Marshall, Buffalo, Akron and Eastern Michigan. At 6 feet 4, 270-pounds, Hollins plays defensive end at Aliquippa -- where he is a three-year starter -- but will be shifted to the interior of the defensive line in college. Hollins joins New Jersey running back Dion Lewis and Lakeview (Pa.) lineman Cory King as Pitt coach coach Dave Wannstedt's commitments for the Class of 2009.

Pitt still has a football team?

June 25, 2008  08:54 AM ET

He probably chose Pitt so he can go play in the Playtex Bowl.

June 25, 2008  09:23 AM ET

Pitt does have a football team, they have uniforms and everything!

June 25, 2008  09:40 AM ET

I drove through Aliquippa last summer...scareeeeeee

June 25, 2008  12:48 PM ET

That's an impressive offer list......NOT.

June 25, 2008  04:53 PM ET

PITT SUCKS!!!

Yeah they do. In fact if you check your records....the last time JoePud had the onions to play them the Lions got skunked 12-0.

I would be willing to bet that the Panthers go bowling at a higher level than PSU does this year...if the Lions play enough pastries on their home schedule to get that impressive 8-4 record , 'Nits fans would welcome an invite and pile into their RVs to get to the Playtex bowl.

Although you never know how a recruit will develop...certainly an impressive offer list can tantalizing...but does not always translate into success down the road. The Panthers recruited another kid out of Alliquippa a few years back that had a few offers too. A couple years later he was the first db chosen in the first round and now starts for the NY Jets. They also have a freshman All American DE from last year that is being projected as a first rounder in a couple years....Pitt was his only offer. How many former 4 & 5 star recruits disappear every year?

Being highly sought after is nice....developing into a good college player is another story. My point is....good players don't always have to come from having 30 offers from all the top programs.

Did you even bother to read the post...or are you that thick headed to believe that being a 4 or 5 star recruit GUARANTEES a successful college career and anything less will GUARANTEE mediocrity.

Sometimes you do "get lucky" when a lesser regarded recruited player becomes a star. Just because a high school junior doesn't have USC & Florida after him doesn't mean he is destined to be average. Dozens of guys get drafted by the NFL every year that didn't have all the major programs chasing them as preps. Duh.

June 25, 2008  11:01 PM ET

There's no chance Pitt has a better season that PSU this year. Speaking of pastries, here is the Pitt schedule:
Bowling Green
Buffalo
Iowa
Syracuse
Navy
Notre Dame
Louisville

Ok...that's 7 of 12 games. Pitt def. isn't competing for the hardest schedule award.

June 25, 2008  11:03 PM ET

Maybe JoePa doesn't want to play Pitt b/c Pitt charges our fans 3x more for that game than all of the others b/c Pitt can't sell tickets via quality football.

June 25, 2008  11:04 PM ET

The only Pitt players I can think of are Dan Marino and Larry Fitzgerald...i'm trying to come up with more names but i'm tapped out!

June 25, 2008  11:27 PM ET

And as far as the 'joepud' thing you have....JoePA has a life sized statue of himself outside of the largest stadium in the country this year.

I don't think you have any room to talk with Wannstedt and where ever Pitt plays.

as for other players then Marino and Fitzgerald that came from Pitt and was a star in the NFL, two more names comes to mind, a little guy named Martin who played for the Jets and ended ip in the top 10 in the NFL in career rushing, and someone named Dorsette... as for the almighty Penn St program and all its supposed stars, lets see Kerry Collins haha what a joke, Lavar Arrington pleaseeeeeeeShane Conlin, mediocre at best...the running back Warner nahhh, the list goes on and on and on...needless to say being recruited and playing at a major university doesnt mean your going to be good, let alone great

June 26, 2008  05:25 AM ET

Last Call (that may explain it),
You are either the most naive individual born or a complete idiot. I'm going to assume the first for now. Let me explain a fairly simple idea in college football and in fact life. Those that are better qualified for a particular job are in demand from the more elite programs whether it be in football or business. Top notch physicians are recruited by the most prestigious hospitals, Top notch football players are recruited by the top football programs. I never said that 4 or 5 stars GUARANTEE'S success. Read it!!!!! If you can't understand that a one star recruit with offers from 4 mid majors will need luck to achieve star status at a major university then I can assume you are (Here's where I use the alternative name) an......idiot.
BillWrigley | 06/26/08, 12:03 AM

I'll say it again in case you missed it first time Einstein. Very good college football players come out of programs up and down the horizon of division 1. The NFL is littered with little known guys from little known programs that Rivals considered a 2 star recruit. Just because LSU & OSU didn't recruit a guy....doesn't mean he will not develop into a good college player. There are other factors that make star players other than Southern Cal offered you a schollie.

Go back through the lists of Rivals top 100 recruits every year and count the washouts , has beens, and never was's. Idiot.

June 26, 2008  05:37 AM ET

As for NWPA...."tapped out" is a good adjective for you.

June 26, 2008  07:32 AM ET

Mark May, Tony Dorsett, Russ Grimm, Hugh Green, Curtis Martin, Mike Ditka, and a few others I can't think of right now. Pitt was always a top ten school in the 70 & 80's. Maybe they'll get back to that level. (I don't know with Wannstedt though). Also have one of the best RB in the nation this year.
