Sheets to test free-agent market

Ben Sheets confirmed Tuesday that he has every expectation of testing the free-agent market this winter. "That's the direction I'm headed right now," Sheets said. "You can't invite yourself back." The Brewers' staff ace referred to the club's decision not to try to negotiate a new deal before or during the 2008 season. Sheets is having the kind of year that every free agent-to-be covets. After tossing a complete-game four-hitter Monday night against Atlanta, he is 9-1 with a 2.59 earned run average through 15 starts, with a league-best three complete games. Now, even if the Brewers came calling with a new offer, Sheets admitted that he probably wouldn't listen.

I have a feeling ol' Hank is measuring Ben for pinstripes already...

How much $$ does a chronically injured pitcher stand to make in free agency? Just Jarret Wright, Carl Pavano, AJ Burnett, Mike Hampton and so on and so on.

The belief, "it's always about the money" seems to be fading away somewhat when it comes to free agency. Randy Wolf going to San Diego instead of Philadelphia is an example. Maybe this is another example - if Sheets does in fact spurn a higher offer from the Brewers after all. We'll see. Does he prefer the beautiful weather and pitcher-friendly Petco Park instead of a huge pay-day by chance?

even if it is not "all" about the money, there has to be at least a semblance of something in lines of what a more major market team would offer... and with lower costs of living and taxes, hometown discounts are really overblown and don't make that much of a bad economic deal. in any event, the brewers will still suck..

Amen, US Govt! I am sick of the money grubbers. First they say they want to play for a contender then they jump ship for a couple of extra nickles as soon as a team is being assembled around them. Good job, Ben! Way to derail a train that was just getting on track.

Yes. PLEASE let the Yankees sign Ben Sheets to a huge deal.

Why? You already have Carl Pavano, pretty much the same in my book.

I think some of these cases are all about money and some are about respect. These "aces" feel like they shouldnt have to beg and plead to get an extension. The Brewers need him when he is healthy, so why risk losing him. Negotiate and extend.

June 25, 2008  09:40 AM ET

The Yanks will get him and he'll injure his shoulder signing the contract. The Yanks don't want to go there. He's a good pitcher when healthy and that is rare. Except this year which shockingly is a contract year.

Exactly my point.

My comment was in response to the first comment in here about George sizing up Sheets for pinstripes, as if that'd be a great move.

I don't follow the NL real close, but I swear every year for the last 3-4 years the Brewers season forecasts seem to include phrases like:

"Could contend once Sheets comes off the DL"

June 25, 2008  09:45 AM ET

Either that or "Could be a factor if Sheets stays healthy..."

This is a moot point. Pavano is going to come off the DL in August, dominate AL Teams, somehow win the AL Cy Young Award, and get another 4 year contract from the Yankees for twice as much. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Or.... more likely, he will strain his ribs, shoulder and back reaching over his shoulder to pat himself on the back for being Carl Pavano.

I think that byline is actually on the team's official letterhead.

If he could be healthy in the playoffs i would rent him. Clearly the Yankees don't need that much pitching in the regular season.
